if your in the car for example the person sitting next to you can talk in the microphone and you can hear them better. Because their mouth is closer to the microphone than your ear there is less noise from car etc. making it easier to hear them.

Well, personally, I have experienced a bit of hearing loss after listening to loud stuff…well, kind of experienced.
In the past…well, not that far back, about half a year ago, I used to watch television and blast the volume(Nah, I didn't disturb the neighbors). Though it is kinda nice to do so as you block out all surrounding noise, I realised that when speaking to my friends, I could not hear them as clearly as I used to and they begun to make jokes such as "Hey dude, you gotta get a hearing aid!"
Anyway, I do think that you'll suffer from significant hearing loss if you listen to you iPod at too loud volumes but I doubt if it would result in permanent hearing loss. You might experience a kind of high pitched ringing noise after listening to extremely loud music and depending on the loudness and how long you've been listening to, the time that your hearing will return differs.

Wonderful! My 17 month old son wears Naida’s too and I hope this will enable him to access all those high frequency sounds as well.

Shes a fuckin cutie! I had to get a hearing aid like a month ago (woke up one morning with SIGNIFICANT hearing loss). Blew out an ear drum playing the drums but iv’e also had problems with my ears my entire life so it wasnt just that. Got an “in-canal” aid by my boyz at seimens lol. Can’t even see the fucker. I wear one in each ear, so I can relate. I don't understand either, since they cost more than a computer, and don't do nearly as much! Custom fitting is a simple, inexpensive procedure using plastic; the circuitry is basically the same for all of them; etc.etc. There is no reason for such an expense. By the way I wear two recently purchased CIC models by Starkey, digitals with volume control, and they were only half the cost you cite.
