Then we checked the thresholds for my “old” ear. I found it surprisingly easy to hear the beeps and was completely confident that I had heard them. To me utter surprise, my audiologist said, “This ear has changed a lot!” And then he told me that the new map would require less power than the previous one. Less power translates into more battery life! I walked out of there with a smile.
If it has been more than a year since you were last mapped, you may want to make the trip to your cochlear implant center for a check-up. You just never know what surprises may be in store for you. Also, remember to check in with your cochlear implant surgeon for an annual “head check” as well. They check the implant site to make sure everything looks okay.

i can only assume it gives them the beat of the song prerecorded into their ear so they do the right times and that, it also acts as something to keep them from being tone deaf, put your finger in your ear and sing and you will hear a difference then not having it in.

No. What the doctor may have meant (and I've asked my audiologist about this as I've had the experience) is that when we wear hearing aids we get used to hearing a lot of different sounds that we ghaven't heard for a long time as we have lost our hearing, and when we remove our hearing aids then our hearing seems duller, simply because we've gotten used to hearing more with our aids in.
Another thing to remember is that when someone who is deaf/hard of hearing/hearing impaired, call them what you want, that person ios still deaf, with or without hearing aids. Hearing aids simply compensate for the degree of hearing loss a person has.
Please do let your grandfather be put off by what he was told. Hearing aids can and do make a big difference to a persons quality of life. Take it from me and the millions like me around the world who wear hearing aids every day.

Noise exposure over 90 dBA for over 8 hours is enough to begin to damage your outer hair cells in your cochlea. Over time that damage will become cumulative and permanent and result in loss from the 2-6 kHz range (higher pitched sounds). Impact/impulse noise can cause immediate hearing loss if it is sufficiently loud.
If people have to shout over the noise to be heard, its probably too loud to spend extended lengths of time in that environment without suffering a temporary hearing loss. If you're in doubt you're better off wearing ear plugs.
