A tumor is only one of many possible causes. Did the audiologist say if it was conductive or sensorineural? I would consider seeing and ear, nose, and throat specialist to find out the cause- but don't freak out just yet, there are lots of other possibilities other than a tumor. everything from damage to the eardrum to drug use to an infection, and that's just scratching the surface. good luck

Hate to break it to you, but hearing is fundamental in nursing.
You need to be able to use a stethoscope with accuracy, and sometimes there is background noise which can make it difficult even for 100% hearing. You need to be able to hear when people call out for you as they don't always use a call bell. You need to hear unusual sounds or faint alarms that might be pointing to something much bigger.
I think you might be able to work in an area of nursing like research or administration, but I'm not sure you'd be able to make it through nursing school with a hearing loss.
The best thing to do is contact the nursing schools directly to see.

I'm just left wondering how to filter out the vowels only, in order to boost the consonants!? Or vice versa.
I don't have a hearing aid or work with hearing aids, but I think that customising the response to various frequency bands to suit the individual aid wearer's hearing would be a more suitable way of improving understanding.

you should check with your department of health and human services. they have free clinics and doctors that can perscribe you and recomdend free medication and or medical devices. You also may want to check out any sort of living assistance, Medicare. Depending on where you live they have localized gov't health insurance for the uninsured. You may be qualified, or your parents, and use theirs depending on how old you are.

Nothing at this point. If the doc said you had "slight" hearing loss in one ear, don't sweat it. Now, if he said you have some condition that will result in progressive hearing loss, then you need to look into hearing aids or the possibility of ear surgery. Best thing to do now to protect yourself from further hearing loss is (a) don't listen to music too loud, and (b) wear hearing protection if you're in an environment where you'll be exposed to loud noises, like using power tools or going to concerts.

Yes there are different brands. However each brand usually also has a $1000 model, $2000 model, $4000 model etc. With hearing aids there really isn't much difference among brands. Each audiologist is going to have their "favorite" manufacturer based on how much experience they have with their products. It is always best to go with something the audiologist is familiar with because they have more knowledge of what works and what doesn't work with those products. My advice is to see an audiologist not a hearing instrument specialist. Audiologists have at least a master's if not a doctorate degree. Audiologists use hearing aids from major manufacturers. My favorites are Widex, Phonak, Resound, and Starkey. Other major manufacturers are Oticon, Siemens, Unitron, and Rexton. Stay away from places that use their own brands and not a major manufacturer listed above.
