It depends on the cause of the deafness. Congenital deafness is caused by the ear being imperfectly formed.
Sensorineural hearing loss occurs when there is a problem with some part of the inner ear or with the nerves that send messages from the inner ear to the brain.The most common cause of sensorineural hearing loss is change in the inner ear as people age.
The little hairs, cilia, in the inner ear can become damaged by poor blood supply, loud noises injury and some medications.

Deafness due to middle ear infection or injury is because the 3 little bones cannot vibrate to pass the sound waves on through the oval window to the inner ear. Displacement of the ossicles will cause a conductive hearing loss that can only be corrected with surgery.

A perforated eardrum interferes with the sound conduction.

The 8th cranial nerve (auditory or acoustic nerve) is responsible for transmitting sound and from the inner ear to the brain. If that is damaged we cannot hear as nerve impulses are transmitted to a certain part of the brain where they are processed and interpreted as recognizable sounds.

According to my B&C Record Book it takes a minimum score of 170 for a typical whitetail to make it into the book, but the non-typical rack is going to have to have a minimum of a 195 score before it will be considered. I don't have the book for Pope & Young, but you might try finding that out at Google. Or better yet, find the website for P&Y and look it up there. Good luck. ((NOTE: I read my score minimums directly from the "Records Of North American Big Game" which is the official record book of the Boone & Crockett Club which I consider to be the most obvious authorities on that subject. For the record, there is obviously a difference between getting a certificate of recognition and actually making it into the record book itself. To make it INTO the book, those scores still hold true. In all probability, if the minimums are ever changed, they will be raised rather than lowered.))
