Grab a chunk of hair you want to use to form a spike; if you're fanning a Mohawk, grab the first section of your Mohawk (it typically won't be any wider than you can hold with one hand) or, better yet, pull it up with a comb or brush. A brush is more likely to keep stray hairs crossing horizontally, which will provide the spike or fan with more support. Hold it straight up, but don't pull it too hard. This will work for a shorter Mohawk under about 7-8 inches. Once you get above that, you are going to find that fanning with this method will usually leave giant gapes in your fan. So. to get a great looking fan a foot high, here's what you do. Get a piece of cardboard and cut it to the shape of your head. lean horizontally and comb it onto the cardboard into the desired gapless fan. Then hairspray it liberally to keep its shape. you may also need to add some glue to help it keep the shape. I highly recommend Elmer's glue, use baking soda to get it out easier. Now, peel it off the piece of cardboard.(save the cardboard, you can probably use it again) It will probably droop a little depending on the amount of glue and hairspray you put in it. But it will maintain a good looking fan. Now just glue it up as normal
Spray the section of hair with hairspray for the whole length of the hair, starting at the base. Alternately, apply hair glue. Apply the spray or glue liberally, and apply it like a maniac around the base to keep it sturdy. You might want to use your free hand after you spray it on to rub it up and down the portion of hair to get it evenly distributed, especially if you're using a mist hairspray instead of a spray can.
Blow dry the section (while still holding it in place) for at least 20 to 30 seconds, or until it's dry to the touch. The longer you blow dry it, the better chance you'll have of keeping it upright. It might still be somewhat sticky, but it'll stay in place on its own if you've dried it enough.
Repeat steps 6-8 for each spike or each section of the fan. If you're fanning a Mohawk try to make sure you fan it evenly: after the fan dries, you may want to run a comb up through each section of the fan to make it appear tidier and more connected. Apply another coat of hairspray after combing.
Dye your hair if desired. You can make your Mohawk or liberty spikes unique by coloring them. The possibilities are endless.
