Drenched with a rich history of stories, the Thousand Islands region offers plenty to explore –by land or by sea
In the Thousand Islands, every isle has its own story. Collectively, that means 1,864 tales –the area’s name lowballs the number –bounded by the banks of the St. Lawrence River along the New York and Canadian border.

Dom Vasco da Gama was born circa 1469 at Sines and died on Christmas eve in Cochin, India, in 1524, being Viceroy of India. After his successful first voyage by sea to India (1497-1499), King Emmanuel I gave him the title of Dom (Lord) with an annual grant of 300.000 reais, for him and his descendants, and appointed him Admiral of the Indies (January, 1500). In 1519, the Admiral was granted the coveted title of Count of Vidigueira [1].

Very little is known about Vasco da Gama before his appointment as Capitão-Mor (Captain-General) of the fleet sent to find the sea route to India. He was the son of Estêvão da Gama – a knight commander of Cercal of the Order of St. James of the Sword and alcaide-mor of the village of Sines, which also belonged to the latter Order – and of his wife Isabel Sodré.

His father was a member of the Household of prince Dom Fernando – master of the Order of St. James, and later on, to that of the prince's son – Dom Diogo, duke of Viseu, having also fought in Castille and in the North Africa's military campaigns. His father's family, from the southern province of Alentejo, appears to have had close links with the military Order of Avis and later on with the Order of St. James [2].

His mother's family, of English ascendancy , [3] had also links with the household of Dom Diogo, duke of Viseu and governor of the military Order of Christ.

By 1480's he was admitted to the Order of St. James together with some of his brothers. In 1495, being governor of the Order of St. James, prince Dom Jorge (1481- 1550), duke of Coimbra and a bastard son of King John II who had just died, Vasco da Gama was granted two commanderies of the Order of St. James (those of Mouguelas and Chouparia)[4]. However, King Dom Manuel I's promise to award Vasco da Gama the senhorio of the Order of St. James's village of Sines led to conflicts with the Order's master and the local authorities [5]

After his return from India in 1503, and around 1507, Vasco da Gama was transferred to the Order of Christ, under the governorship of King Emmanuel I himself, in what can be seen as a means of solving his disputes with the Order of St. James over the lordship of Sines or as a sign of promotion [6].

    AMERIGO VESPUCCI (1454-1512)
Amerigo Vespucci is important because he was one of the early explorers of the New World, and also because the continents of North and South America were named in his honor. (He was also known by the name of Americus Vespucci.)

Amerigo Vespucci was born in Florence, Italy in 1454. He was well-educated by his uncle, and became a businessman involved in trading goods. That is how he became familiar with ships. He moved to Seville, Spain in 1491 to work in the trading business there. He was probably there when Christopher Columbus returned from his first journey to the New World. He then helped Columbus get ships ready for his second and third voyages to the New World.

Vespucci was a skilled navigator. As a trader, he was very interested in finding a quicker way to sail to Asia. He went on at least two, and possibly four, voyages to Central and South America between 1497 and 1504 for Spain and Portugal. He went to many places, including Venezuela and Brazil.

After his explorations in 1501-1502, he was one of the first explorers to come up with the idea that these places he had visited were not part of Asia (as Columbus thought) but rather were part of a "New World." In 1507, a pamphlet was published called "The Four Voyages of Amerigo" and the author suggested that the new land that Amerigo had explored be named in his honor. At first, the name of America was only meant to apply to South America, but later on, both continents of America became known by his name.

After his explorations, Amerigo returned to Seville and became its Master Navigator. He stayed in that job until he died in 1512.

    and Cristopher Columbus of course

No matter how rich you are, if you don”t protect your asset, it can be dangerous for you. Remember, your wealth is not safe if you don”t protect it. Whether it is a business, a family or an individual, safeguarding the wealth is crucial. Before you get sued, you need to ensure that your asset is protected. Hoyt dry fires their limbs over 3000 times before putting that particular limb into production.Odds are the Matthews limbs will blow up if dry fired once. But they will replace them when they do.But these are the top two bows on the market at this time.

No, no, and again I say no!! I mean, yes, the rich should pay their 'fair share' of taxes. But why is it that their 'fair share' is different than my 'fair share'? Am I not as important a citizen? Does my money not count? (I am not wealthy, not even middle class, really). No, I don't mean to say that the gov't should take more of my money, but in taxing people differently, the gov't is discriminating. Also, there is no reason that someone who has worked hard and risen to the top of their profession should have to give me money! I know several wealthy people who are quite generous naturally. They give and give and give. Why not allow them to give, rather than taxing them to death so the gov't can pay someone to dole out their money for them? It doesn't make sense to me. But then, the income tax really doesn't make sense either. The income tax punishes people for working and earning money. It punishes people even more when they study hard and excel in whatever they do. Seems to me like the very definition of 'unfair'. The income tax punishes the small-business owner who has grown to the point where he can hire employees, and give people jobs. I don't think you should pay a higher percentage because you excel, and earn a lot of money.
And another note. Much of the tax is used for social programs. I do not know Bill Gates, or Oprah, or Tom Cruise, or Al Gore. Why on earth should any of them be forced by the gov't to be responsible for my children, my healthcare, my housing, or my ability to buy food? Those things are MY problems, and I need to deal with them as a responsible adult.
Besides, I hope to one day be one of those people who has excelled due to hard work and clawing my way to the top. I spent years being poor – I want to responsibly choose how to 'spend' my reward once I get there, don't you?

The causes of the French Revolution are complicated, so complicated that a debate still rages among historians regarding origins, causes and results. In general, the real causes of the Revolution must be located in the rigid social structure of French society during the ancien regime. As it had been for centuries, French society was divided into three Estates or Orders. The First Estate consisted of the clergy and the Second Estate the nobility. Together, these two Estates accounted for approximately 500,000 individuals. At the bottom of this hierarchy was the vast Third Estate which basically meant everybody else, or about 25 million people. This social structure was based on custom and tradition, but more important, it was also based on inequalities which were sanctioned by the force of law. So, we must look at these three Estates more carefully.

    The Third Estate
This estate ostensibly consisted of every one who was not a member of either the First or Second Estates. Totaling approximately 25 million souls, the Third Estate was composed of the bourgeoisie, the peasantry and the urban artisans. As a class, the bourgeoisie – merchants, manufacturers, bankers, doctors, lawyers, intellectuals – had wealth. In some cases, enormous wealth. But, wealth in the ancien regime did not mean status or privilege and it should be clear by now that "success" in 18th century France meant status and privilege. Wealth was nothing without status. The bourgeoisie were influenced by the nobility and tried to imitate them whenever possible. So, they tried to improve their status by becoming land owners themselves. By 1789, the bourgeoisie controlled 20% of all the land. They were upwardly mobile, but they felt frustrated and blocked by the aristocracy, an aristocracy whose only interest was that everyone maintain their place in society.

By 1789, the bourgeoisie had numerous grievances they wished addressed. They wanted all Church, army and government positions open to men of talent and merit. They sought a Parliament that would make all the laws for the nation. They desired a constitution that would limit the king's powers. They also desired fair trials, religious toleration and vast administrative reforms. These are all liberal ideas that would certainly emerge after the summer of 1789.

The peasantry consisted of at least twenty-one million individuals during the 18th century……

We will attempt to bring together elements of all these areas of research and practice to develop a framework for emergent learning that can be applied across education, work, and social networking, with their increasingly blurred boundaries. This paper describes emergent learning and situates it within learning networks and systems and the broader learning ecology of Web 2.0. It describes the nature of emergence and emergent learning and the conditions that enable emergent, self-organised learning to occur and to flourish. Specifically, it explores whether emergent learning can be validated and self-correcting and whether it is possible to link or integrate emergent and prescribed…
