My favorite foodie memory: Near the end of a foodie week in Sidney, Australia, where my boyfriend Alan and I snacked on meat pies, slurped rock oysters, and supped on Moreton Bay bugs (a kind of lobster), we came across a restored Victorian gingerbread house-turned-restaurant in an urban artists’ quarter. As soon as we sat down, the waiter appeared, as if on cue, with a plate of appetizers and two flutes of sparkling wine. Alan held up his glass to make a toast. He began, “I’d like to propose…” He stopped, his face suddenly a proud grin. I stared at him. I waited for him to go on. When he didn’t, I began to cry. “Well?” he demanded, “are you just going to cry? Or are you going to marry me?”

I am a professional flutist and music director. I make around $100,000 combining my teaching (full-time), my private teaching, my professional performing ( I am retiring from my music director position in about 6 months and will do only the other remaining things, increasing my professional performing), judging competitions, and various other musical activities such as arranging, etc. I hold two undergrad degrees and a grad degree from fine conservatories, and have been doing this professional and continually (although the balance of performing and teaching has changed a few times) since 1971. You mileage may vary, and objects in the mirror are closer than they appear.

    Hello there:

This is a relatively easy question. ALL China made flutes ARE unreliable, made with poor quality materials and metals. They are reasonably priced because they ARE CHEAP. Flutes are not built in China… they are assembled and there is a difference quality-wise.

I will give you the same advice as I would give parents looking for a good flute for their students. Stick with the well known – reputable flute manufacturers that have been in the flute business for decades… not the fly by night exports flooding in from third world countries.

I am curious to how much these flu

We look everywhere we can. A sense of curiosity is a start, of course, and a knack for finding the unusual helps. We also listen — plenty of good ideas come from friends and readers. E-mail has really helped in that regard.

Funny story along those lines — my wife once told me that I should do a story on two of our friends who have been running together on weekends for 25 years. I asked, what's the hook? I discovered that they started because one thought it would be a good way to get over the grief caused by the death of a child. Bingo. Got a really nice warm story of it.

You just never know. But usually, everyone has a story to tell.

In America, adult children make their own decisions about their own lives, whether their parents like it or not. A person does not reach full emotional maturity until they have made themselves completely independent of their parents. If you never achieve complete independence, you risk remaining psychologically a child well into your adulthood.

I don't care what your cultural background is. When you turn 18 in America, you are entitled to call the shots in your own life. With the exception of Nebraska and Mississippi, you can marry at 18 without parental permission… though generally it's better to wait until your 20s. If you want to get married, then that's your decision. Pops will just have to live with it. Your religion may be Islam, but you are also American.

However, since you are still a student, it would be wise for you to wait until you've graduated, you have a job, your own apartment, and are supporting yourself without financial help from your parents. Only then do you fully become an adult.

From Dionisio Quilla comes this delightful zampoa, a bamboo panpipe of glorious tones that recall the wind blowing across the majestic Peruvian highlands. Zampoa is an essential instrument to accompany the folk music of Peru and especially the high Andes, where this instrument is widely used. This zampoa is considered to be of superior, professional quality hence Malta Professional, for it comprises two tiers of flutes, one of six the other of seven pipes, to procure the perfect pitch. With a lifetime dedicated to the elaboration of Peruvian traditional instruments, Quilla states, The making of professional instruments is a delicate endeavor not only because of the special material but also for the tonalities its meant to produce. Quilla displays his expertise by carefully selecting the bamboo reeds according to the notes he wishes to produce and holds the reeds together with a small wooden slab. A brightly colored wool band creates a stunning decorative accent and includes an…

A dragon coils around this handsome bamboo flute, its tip depicting a fish. Known as a suling in Bali, the instrument is carefully crafted by Nyoman Lentong. Flutes of this type are used in the Balinese gamelan percussion orchestra, whose importance goes well beyond the pleasure of music and into the realm of ritual ceremony. Lentong shapes the buluh, or bamboo, by hand, using burnt coconut ash to create the motifs. He signs it as Pan Nasib, as he is known in his village.

Reign of Yaroslav: Yaroslav, known as “the Wise”, struggled for power with his brothers. A son of Vladimir the Great, he was vice-regent of Novgorod at the time of his father’s death in 1015. Subsequently, his eldest surviving brother, Svyatopolk the Accursed, killed three of his other brothers and seized power in Kiev. Yaroslav, with the active support of the Novgorodians and the help of Viking mercenaries, defeated Svyatopolk and became the grand prince of Kiev in 1019.[27] Although he first established his rule over Kiev in 1019, although he did not have uncontested rule of all of Kievan Rus’ until 1036. Like Vladimir, Yaroslav was eager to improve relations with the rest of Europe, especially the Byzantine Empire. Yaroslav’s granddaughter, Eupraxia the daughter of his son Vsevolod I, Prince of Kiev, was married to Henry III, Holy Roman Emperor. Yaroslav also arranged marriages for his sister and three daughters to the kings of Poland, France, Hungary and Norway. Yaroslav promulgated the first East Slavic law code, Russkaya Pravda; built Saint Sophia Cathedral in Kiev and Saint Sophia Cathedral in Novgorod; patronized local clergy and monasticism; and is said to have founded a school system. Yaroslav’s sons developed the great Kiev Pechersk Lavra (monastery), which functioned in Kievan Rus’ as an ecclesiastical academy.

In the centuries that followed the state’s foundation, Rurik’s descendants shared power over Kievan Rus’. Princely succession moved from elder to younger brother and from uncle to nephew, as well as from father to son. Junior members of the dynasty usually began their official careers as rulers of a minor district, progressed to more lucrative principalities, and then competed for the coveted throne of Kiev. In the 11th century and the 12th century, the princes and their retinues, which were a mixture of Slavic and Scandinavian elites, dominated the society of Kievan Rus’. Leading soldiers and officials received income and land from the princes in return for their political and military services. Kievan society lacked the class institutions and autonomous towns that were typical of Western European feudalism. Nevertheless, urban merchants, artisans and labourers sometimes exercised political influence through a city assembly, the veche (council), which included all the adult males in the population. In some cases, the veche either made agreements with their rulers or expelled them and invited others to take their place. At the bottom of society was a stratum of slaves. More important was a class of tribute-paying peasants, who owed labour duty to the princes. The widespread personal serfdom characteristic of Western Europe did not exist in Kievan Rus
