Current hearing threshold level in either ear greater than that described below is disqualifying:
(1) Pure tone at 500, 1000, and 2000 cycles per second for each ear of not more than 30 decibels (dB) on the average, with no individual level greater than 35 dB at those frequencies.
(2) Pure tone level not more than 45 dB at 3000 cycles per second or 55 dB at 4000 cycles per second for each ear.
(3) There is no standard for 6000 cycles per second.
Current or history of hearing aid use (V53.2) is disqualifying.

I know what you mean, what I have done is my hearing aid has an FM reciever and I can use my hearing aids and what ever my professors say I hear right in my hearing aids with out the added background noise. It is awesome and has helped me so much since I have been in college.

Noise exposure over 90 dBA for over 8 hours is enough to begin to damage your outer hair cells in your cochlea. Over time that damage will become cumulative and permanent and result in loss from the 2-6 kHz range (higher pitched sounds). Impact/impulse noise can cause immediate hearing loss if it is sufficiently loud.
If people have to shout over the noise to be heard, its probably too loud to spend extended lengths of time in that environment without suffering a temporary hearing loss. If you're in doubt you're better off wearing ear plugs.

These hearing aids do have disadvantages as well. You cannot always use an open dome, hearing losses can be too severe, retention is generally not as good, they can be less cosmeticlly appealing than a different style and they are not always appropriate for certain people with maniipulation difficulties ec.

Contact your closest VA medical center and ask for compensation and pension. They will guide you in filing your claim and or setting you up with a social worker to help. Once you've filled out the claim, then they will bring you in for screening of the claim. There, as you have repeatedly heard in the news, that there is a backlog in claims. Mine did take a while to get. Don't forget you are eligible to receive hearing aides from the VA (I have an exceptional pair) and that you are also eligible to apply for a VA loan, they guarantee the loan so you would be more protected in the occurrence of near foreclosure as your current situation. There are many resources that can help with the PTSD, I see a provider outside of the VA system. Based on your hearing loss and PTSD I would get screened for a traumatic brain injury as well, if you've been exposed to close range IED blasts, is that where your hearing loss came from? There is also a program through the VA called * VA vocational rehabilitation program* Check it out for finding skills and jobs that suit your abilities best and they also can pay for training/school to get you to that job. A mixed hearing loss is a combination of a conductive hearing loss and a sensorineural hearing loss. The conductive component of mixed hearing losses are often temporary like how you describe for your son. If the conductive component is caused by middle ear fluid, the part of the hearing loss will more than likely get better.
The sensorineural component is permanent. And depending upon the degree of the sensorineural component, he may or may not require amplification from hearing aids.
I would recommend you consult your audiologist to discuss the effects of your son's hearing loss on his ability to hear and understand speech. He or she will be able to give you a better idea if he will possibly require hearing aids. It truly depends on his audiogram and your son's audiologist and ENT will be your best sources for determining the answer to this question.
