My 5 yr old daughter just got her first aides this year and its really been a miracle for her. She has mild to mod loss in both ears adn mainly wears them for school but recently weve started having her wear them at home more. I remember her reaction this first time she heard “normal” sounds that others take for granted. She had never heard our car running, our refridgerator or birds outside! We have the “nude” colored ones, they arent as noticable. Ins wouldnt cover them but a local org. did

You should keep the headphones down below 85 decibels as anything in this range or above can cause gradual hearing loss you can tel if the headphones are too loud if a friend is standing next to you and can hear the music also.

I am looking at this from several viewpoints, but two in particular: a practical one and a spiritual one. The bible says to treat the alien resident the same as yourself. On the surface of things, that could be used to support a protest of this law. But let us look further at what is meant and the practicality of inviting everyone into a finite space, with a finite or shrinking job market.

No it would not be due to the combat – noise exposure causes hearing loss immediately as above person stated. That is why usually when you exit the service you get a hearing test to rule out the possibility of hearing loss from combat. The only way to be sure your hearing was normal when you exited the service is with a hearing test. I see people in my office everyday who think there hearing loss is normal and they sometimes end up having a huge hearing loss.
I used to work at the VA. In order to get service connected for hearing loss you have to file a claim. Your service medical records will be reviewed. If you did not get a hearing test when you exited the service and you now have hearing loss you may get a service connection. However if you had normal hearing at exit your claim will be denied and no service connection disability will be awarded. The only way to know for sure is to file the claim. Also I don't know when you served in the military, but mostly back for WWII vets and some Korea vets they were using the whisper test for hearing test. They would stand you in a room and whisper numbers and have you repeat them. If you passed you were considered normal. This test has been proven to be invalid. The standard test involves you wearing earphones and listening for beeps at different frequencies.

I have only worn aids without the feature. I can tell you it is a bit annoying when in a noisy environment one aid gets quieter (turning down noise) and you hear a difference between ears. Sound may not be quite loud enough to activate noise reduction feature on both aids if it is on one side of you. So I think the wireless communication feature would be nice if both aids were acting the same it would be less annoying to hear the different sounds from each ear. Also the ability to localize sound in the environment is supposed to be improved with the wireless feature. Good Luck!

Hi there,
I'm not a girl. But as a guy, I would encourage you not to think of people (girls included) judging you on the basis of your disability. I know of a blind guy who won over a beautiful girl, who he is now married to! I believe that it is your personality; not your disabilities that counts.
I hope this helps.

Contact your closest VA medical center and ask for compensation and pension. They will guide you in filing your claim and or setting you up with a social worker to help. Once you've filled out the claim, then they will bring you in for screening of the claim. There, as you have repeatedly heard in the news, that there is a backlog in claims. Mine did take a while to get. Don't forget you are eligible to receive hearing aides from the VA (I have an exceptional pair) and that you are also eligible to apply for a VA loan, they guarantee the loan so you would be more protected in the occurrence of near foreclosure as your current situation. There are many resources that can help with the PTSD, I see a provider outside of the VA system. Based on your hearing loss and PTSD I would get screened for a traumatic brain injury as well, if you've been exposed to close range IED blasts, is that where your hearing loss came from? There is also a program through the VA called * VA vocational rehabilitation program* Check it out for finding skills and jobs that suit your abilities best and they also can pay for training/school to get you to that job. Contact me with any other info you need, I have been through every process the VA/Army has with benefits.

because they do not know how to talk to them through signing, and most people do not carry a pen and pad with them..so if they can not ask them what they were going to they just tell them there sorry for bothering them and walk away, most hearing impaired can read lips so they know what your saying.but if they can not speak you will not understand..now most of the hearing impaired can talk their voices are a bit flat but you can understand them and most hearing people who have never been around a hearing impaired person would not know that..the only exception may be some one who has been deaf since birth they may not be able to talk as well as some one who use to be able to hear..

Hate to break it to you, but hearing is fundamental in nursing.
You need to be able to use a stethoscope with accuracy, and sometimes there is background noise which can make it difficult even for 100% hearing. You need to be able to hear when people call out for you as they don't always use a call bell. You need to hear unusual sounds or faint alarms that might be pointing to something much bigger.
I think you might be able to work in an area of nursing like research or administration, but I'm not sure you'd be able to make it through nursing school with a hearing loss.
The best thing to do is contact the nursing schools directly to see.

This is a good example of a sloping hearing loss (most commonly caused by aging) but does not simulate all noise induced hearing loss -I have a cookie bite notch in my audiogram at 3k and it is a completely different sound -its hard to explain -high notes are clear as a bell but the midrange is dropping out so music sounds tinny and people sound like they are speaking with a lisp all the time- its not a problem for communication yet but still very very frustrating

Don't jump to the worst, please. I has a sneezing attack last weekend and it made my hearing different in one ear. I purchased some decongestant pills and took them two or three times and my problem resolved. Often, it can be crude in your ear, allergies or some other mundane cause. Try the least invasive treatments first, but get a test (an MRI?) so you aren't afraid of cancer. Don't waste energy on fear of what doesn't exist.
I know that just having my hearing different for a short time was very disturbing. I hope that you can find a treatment for your problem that cures it. Acupuncture, where needles go into the ear, can make some beneficial changes. I was really surprised by how acupuncture changed my ear canals for the better.

According to health experts, hearing loss has become one of the most common reasons affecting a large number of people in the US. If you or any one in your family is suffering from severe ear infection, nausea, vertigo, or dizziness it is important to visit an ENT physician without delay. If neglected, ear ailments can lead to more serious problems, like facial nerve disorders, chronic ear infections, tumors inside ears, and balance disorders. In Homer Glen, Illinois, there are plenty…

An anonymous reader writes “The price of a pair of hearing aids in the U.S. ranges from $3,000 to $8,000. To the average American household, this is equivalent to 2-3 months of income! While the price itself seems exorbitant, what is even more grotesque is its continuous pace of growth: in the last decade the price of an average Behind the Ear hearing aid has more than doubled. To the present day price points are not receding — even though most of its digital components have become increasingly commoditized. Is this this a hearing aid price bubble?
