With all of this going on, it is making it easier than ever for hearing aid reviews consumers. Feel free to let the creativity flow with this one. Your Grandma's hearing aids have not been set appropriately for her. I would recommend she return to the Beltone office she purchased them through and have them re-program the hearing aids. It is ideal to have a family member go to the appointment with her to ensure proper care is given and to talk with her while she is getting them tuned. This will help the family know at the time of the office visit that they have been set correctly and she is hearing properly.
Being fit with new hearing aids is a process and does take a few visits to ensure the hearing aids have been adjusted properly. There is also an adjustment period for the hearing aid wearer to get used to hearing with their new hearing aids.
Also testing called Real-ear verification is an absolute must in the hearing aid fitting process. This allows the audiologist or hearing aid specialist to visibly see how well the hearing aids are amplifying once fit on the patient. If the Beltone office she went to does not have real-ear verification, then that is very disappointing and I would recommend going to another office.

Stephen: Actually, that is not completely inaccurate. It’s just assuming a normal or relatively stable population growth. The only time in which the difference becomes inaccurate is when the population declines for a specific age group.

Current hearing aids attempt to do two things to enable hearing impaired people to understand speech. They amplify the speech we want to listen to (the signal) and exclude all the other sound which we don’t want to listen to (the noise). This basic strategy has been around for a long time. Prehistor …

The Oticon Delta was made for people like your mother. It is a high end digital hearing aid with lots of cool bells and whistles. It is really small and has an almost invisible mold (the part that goes into the ear) which can aid up to moderate losses.
Other aids worth considering is anything that you can get in the following configurations — ITE (in the ear), ITC (in the canal), or CIC (completely in canal). Most major manufacturers have several models that can be obtained in these configurations.
The smaller hearing aids are typically for less severe losses so you need to check with an audiologist to see for sure whether her loss is compatible with this technology
Good luck !

I'm just left wondering how to filter out the vowels only, in order to boost the consonants!? Or vice versa.
I don't have a hearing aid or work with hearing aids, but I think that customising the response to various frequency bands to suit the individual aid wearer's hearing would be a more suitable way of improving understanding.
Add noise cancelling as well….?

Direct from David Steiner’s mouth: “I got, besides the $3 billion, you know they’re looking for the Jewish votes, and I’ll tell him whatever he wants to hear. . . Besides the $10 billion in loan guarantees which was a fabulous thing, $3 billion in foreign, in military aid, and I got almost a billion dollars in other goodies that people don’t even know about. . . I have friends on the Clinton campaign, close associates. . . . I’ve known Bill for seven, eight years from the National Governors Association. I know him on a personal basis. . . One of my friends is Hillary Clinton’s scheduler, one of my officer’s daughters works there. We gave two employees from AIPAC leave of absence to work on the campaign. I mean, we have a dozen people in the campaign, in the headquarters, in Little Rock, and they’re all going to get big jobs. . . I also work with a think tank, the Washington Institute. I have Michael Mandelbaum and Martin Indyk being foreign policy advisers. . . Steve Spiegel. . . We have Bill Clinton’s ear. I talked to Bill Clinton. He’s going to be very good for us. . . A girl who worked for me at AIPAC stood up for them at their wedding. Hillary lived with her. I mean we have those relationships. . . Susan Thomases, who’s in there, worked with me on the Bradley campaign. We worked together for 13 years. She’s in there with the family. They stay with her when they come to New York. One of my officers, Monte Friedkin, is one of the biggest fund-raisers for them. I mean, I have people like that all over the country. . . He’s said he’s going to help us. He’s got something in his heart for the Jews, he has Jewish friends. . . Clinton is the best guy for us. . . We’re just negotiating. We’re more interested right now in the secretary of state and the secretary of National Security Agency. . . I’ve got a list. But I really can’t go through it. I’m not allowed to talk about it. . . We’ll have access.”

A 30-year-old Chicago man was charged with first-degree murder tonight in connection with the death of his 14-month-old son, whose body was spotted floating in Lake Michigan by a boater on Thursday. Donald Johnson of the 2200 block of South Princeton Avenue is scheduled to appear for a bond hearing Saturday on the charge, said Cook County state’s attorney’s office spokeswoman Sally Daly. The charge comes after Johnson’s son, Dontrell Johnson, was found floating in the lake off 65th Street about 2 p.m. Thursday. Efforts to resuscitate the boy, of the 7800 block of South Greenwood Avenue, were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead at the University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital. An autopsy performed today showed Dontrell was strangled and his death was ruled a homicide, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Donald Johnson allegedly refused to return the boy to his mother after picking him up in the 9400 block of South Harvard Avenue on Monday. Police have…

There's no point in going to the doctor. There is nothing they can do for your hearing damage. Only thing you can do right now is wear ear plugs to let the cells rest and regenerate. How long it takes to recover depends on the extent of damage. Could be a week or two, or could be never.

Zothecula writes “If you had to use a commuting bicycle in a race, you would probably set about removing the kickstand, fenders, racks and lights to make the thing as fast and efficient as possible. When engineers at Houston’s Rice University are developing small, fast, energy-efficient chips for use in devices like hearing aids, it turns out they do pretty much the same thing. The removal of portions of circuits that aren’t essential to the task at hand is known as ‘probabilistic pruning,’ and it results in chips that are twice as fast, use half the power, and are half the size of conventional chips.”

I’m sitting in Facebook headquarters in Palo Alto, where the company has invited dozens of press and members of the tech community — I’ve spotted nametags with ‘Apple’ and ‘Paypal’ on them, among many others — for a special event. Unlike many of Facebook’s past events, this one isn’t consumer-focused. Instead, it’s all about infrastructure. The invitation to the event says that they’ll be giving us “a behind-the-scenes look at the latest technology powering Facebook”. And we’re hearing that it will include information on how Facebook is building out highly efficient data centers — and that it plans to open source its technology.

This study used hearing loss values (HLVs) measured at 4 kHz and 6 kHz in both ears as a biomarker to investigate the chronic effects of noise exposure on hypertension in 790 aircraft-manufacturing workers. Methods: Participants were divided into a high hearing loss (HL) group (n = 214; average HLVs >= 30 decibel [dB] at 4 kHz or 6 kHz bilaterally; 83.1 +/- 4.9 A-weighted decibel [dBA]), a median HL group (n = 302; 15 (Source: Environmental Health)

As a hearing aid specialist in Oregon I can tell you from experience that most hearing aid specialists (at least the ones I know) will do the hearing test for free. Not only that you can probably get a free trail period (30 days, 100% money back) on hearing aids if it turns out you have a loss.
I would recommend you ask any friends with hearing aids where they got them and if they are satisfied. Hearing aid specialists and audiologists aren't all created the same, some are better than others and getting a personal reference from a someone you trust is a good start.

Kind of ironic that the host talks at the same time as Chrissy Pease. One of the most annoying things about hearing aids, is that they’re not very good at differentiating between different sources of sound. And having two or more talking at the same time, means you get all of them going in at the same time, at the same level.
