I was shocked when my mother-in-law told me how much hers cost – but then I found out that they're tailored to the person specifically and can be adjusted throughout the person's life for free. It's really a good investment if you need better hearing. They're so tiny and don't just amplify sound – they're tailor made.

Afraid not. The Army has limits on vision and hearing disabilities.
If you need a hearing aid to hear normal speech you probably wouldn't qualify for any Armed Service.

buck up and get your self some hearing aids. if you have a high frequency loss. make sure they have directional microphones and at the very least 8 channels so the audiologist has greater programming ease.

Do an internet search on the maker of your hearing aid; the company that manufactures your hearing aid may list service centers in your area. Then you can check to see if any of the service/repair centers are open on the weekend.

Hi, I'm an Audiologist.
Miracle Ear is a company that manufactures hearing aids and has a chain of franchise dispensaries that deal with their product exclusively.
As far as the technology of their devices goes, they are fairly compatible with other brands. However, they tend to charge more, as they need to recoup the money for their advertising.
I've had several patients that have had bad experiences with Miracle Ear products and Dispensers. But then again, if they were happy, they wouldn't be coming to see us. Still, it is an important investment she is making, and she needs to not only consider the cost and convenience, but also the service and professional support she will receive.
I strongly recommend that she consult a few Audiologists rather than Hearing Aid Dispensers in the area, to shop around for the product and service. Especially if she has never worn hearing aids before, it is important that she fully understand the options available to her; and to have someone that will explain to her what to expect, how to adapt to hearing all the sounds she's been missing, and how to get the most from her investment. For example, if both of her ears hear about equally, she would do much better if she had amplification for both ears.
No matter where she purchases, she should get a trial period that is AT LEAST 30 days long, during which she has the option to return the aid(s) with no questions asked (most places do have some portion of the cost that is not refunded). Make sure she goes in for at least one follow-up visit during that trial period and that she gets all her questions answered promptly and professionally.
If at all possible, have someone accompany her to these visits — it's a lot of information, and the some of my patients can seem intimidated by the process. Unfortunately, some seniors can be easily influenced or will simply just want to keep it simple and just stay with the first person they talk to. She's spending a lot of money and these devices need to help her for the next five years or so — it's better not to make a hasty decision.
If you have any additional questions, feel free to click on my name/avatar and the on Contact hearkat and send me a note.

Otolaryngol Head Neck Surg. 2010 Dec; 143(6): 739-44 Bluestone CD, Swarts JD The pathogenesis of otitis media is multifactorial, but the role of evolution on its development has not been addressed. We posit that the high prevalence of middle-ear disease is most likely restricted to humans, in contrast to other wild species, because the associated hearing loss would have reduced the fitness of affected individuals as a result of predation. We present here the possible consequences of two human adaptations that may have resulted in ubiquitous otitis media: the interaction of bipedalism and increased brain size, and the loss of facial prognathism resulting from speech or cooking. As a consequence of our adaptation for bipedalism, the female pelvic outlet is constricted, which, in the context of a rapidly enlarging brain, results in humans being born 12 months too soon. Significantly, immature eustachian tube structure and function, in conjunction with an immature immune system, helps to…

Today, one in ten or more than 28 million Americans suffers from hearing loss. By the year 2030, this number is expected to nearly double. The main cause of hearing loss for most people middle-aged or older is wear and tear. We are living longer, and advancing age is a big factor. As we age damage to the ear increases slowly. Over time, there is partial destruction of the hair cells in the ear from a combination of ordinary exposure to noise and noise bombardment.
That bombardment is a particular risk factor for baby boomers and younger people. Loud concerts and headphones are causing problems. And let's face it, the world is just a noisier place than it was 20 or even 10 years ago. And the noisier it gets, the louder people turn up their earphones to drown out the noise.
If you suspect hearing loss, you should be evaluated. If hearing loss is diagnosed, the most common solution is a hearing aid, but sometimes medical or surgical intervention is needed to improve hearing.

The latest schlocker from the incontinent makers of Saw is set to hunt you down and bore you to death with its 40 sequels It’s best to deal with this upfront – you’ll be hearing a lot about Insidious, probably for many years to come. It’s a new horror film brought to you by some of the people behind both Saw and Paranormal Activity, which suggests that Insidious will initially make a lot of money on a tiny budget and then quickly move to sour whatever goodwill it built up by churning out identical sequels every year until the end of time itself. But before any of that happens, we need to work out what Insidious is actually about. A teaser trailer has just been released, but that doesn’t exactly help matters – it’s cut together so quickly you’d be hard pushed to glean anything from a normal viewing. If we want answers, we’re going to have to roll up our sleeves and get stuck in. 1) On the surface, two handprints on a window might seem infuriatingly enigmatic, but they actually reveal…

Nothing at this point. If the doc said you had "slight" hearing loss in one ear, don't sweat it. Now, if he said you have some condition that will result in progressive hearing loss, then you need to look into hearing aids or the possibility of ear surgery. Best thing to do now to protect yourself from further hearing loss is (a) don't listen to music too loud, and (b) wear hearing protection if you're in an environment where you'll be exposed to loud noises, like using power tools or going to concerts.

Get ye to the hearing repair-est! I suspect it's not a bad battery. If you've been wearing aids this long, you what your aid does when the battery goes south. More likely is a problems with the electronics. I obviously can't diagnose the problem from this distance, but I would suspect one of the following. 1) A bad connection (solder joint or wire), 2) a bad microphone, or 3) a bad speaker – or a combination of any of the above, 4) the speaker or microphone are loose within the aid (the glue has come undone). And of course, the ever popular – your amplifier chip has decided to bite the big one. If your aid is over 5 years old, it's to some degree living on borrowed time. They all die eventually. The ear isn't the nicest neighborhood to work. You've got to put up with a lot of gunk (ear wax), it's hot and humid, and loud noises may fry your innards. Check to see if the aid is still on warranty and/or see if you insurance covers a new one. Unfortunately, I think this one is going to cost you some bucks.

Absolutely the best, if you are evaluated as an appropriate subject, is the cochlear implant. You need to read up on it, and it is a surgical implant, but it is what they use nowadays for even little children with profound hearing loss.

I've worn hearing aids for more than 10 years now. For the longest time I wore in the ear hearing aids and during that time I always thought they could fit a little better. Several months ago, I changed to the Audeo hearing aids (they are expensive, I won't lie) that lie behind the ear. It was a huge change for me at first, b/c you have a little wire that goes into your ear (for the speaker of course), but you get used to it over time. I think behind the ear hearing aids can actually help you hear better since you have more open space in your ear. The in the ear aids kind of jam the sound a little more. I would definitely look into behind the ear hearing aids.

Don't worry about the brand of phone, because all of the phones can be equipped with a volume controlled head set.
Worry about coverage and clarity of signal. My best experience so far are with T-Mobile and Verizon, away from Cingular or Sprint PCS.
I think both of those providers have great family plans, by the way and have good coverage in your area.

couldn't say a specific brand. But, one that is easy to use, and large enough to be seen (by 90 year old eyes), if it is drops it on the floor.

To help manage the problem that many people have, such as hearing loss, there are many alternatives today in regard to hearing aids that can help them hear better. Though they may cost as much as $1000 each, hearing aids can be inexpensive as well. Placement and style are definitely among the many choices and alternatives in regard to hearing aid choices.

An anonymous reader writes “The price of a pair of hearing aids in the U.S. ranges from $3,000 to $8,000. To the average American household, this is equivalent to 2-3 months of income! While the price itself seems exorbitant, what is even more grotesque is its continuous pace of growth: in the last decade the price of an average Behind the Ear hearing aid has more than doubled. To the present day price points are not receding — even though most of its digital components have become increasingly commoditized. Is this this a hearing aid price bubble?

“Pretending like you are “so good that it’s safe” is the kind of attitude that gets people hurt and killed. You aren’t that good. That attitude is one of the key reasons why I support the law. A pistol is also a pretty poor self defense weapon. If you wanted to make the argument for a “safe” weapon in an urban environment, it would be a shotgun. And I can tell you right now that if I were to fire off some buckshot in my old studio I would definitely suffer permanent hearing loss. And if it was anything more powerful than like a #2/3, there’s a good chance some of that is going into someone else living room. You live in Texas. It’s a different scenario. It’s a different world. The benefits far outweigh the costs, as they do in most places. NYC, Tokyo, London…it is fundamentally different.”
