Your hearing aid is your auditory window to the world. You rely on it to stay connected – to communicate and be communicated with. Besides the social value of your hearing aid to you, your hearing aid has a considerable monetary value. It is a delicate instrument that must be properly cared for. Hearing aid maintenance is something you need to master to make your existing hearing aid last longer. A neglected hearing aid may not mode properly.
Cleaning Your Hearing Aid
Cleaning is an important part of hearing aid maintenance.
“Presidential hearing aid history includes President Ronald Reagan and President Bill Clinton, two presidents of very different ages who both wore hearing aids.”
Inspect your hearing aid immediately upon removing it. Wipe the aid with a soft cloth or a facial tissue. Check the halt of the aid that fits into the ear and see if there is any ear wax accumulated there. If there is, use the pick or tool that came with you hearing aid to remove the wax from the end. Some hearing aid wearers prefer to use a toothbrush to remove the excess wax. Either way, carefully brush in and around the plastic tubing until all the wax is removed.
“Considering advances in technology, and the ability of science to shrink useful items, the hearing aid of the future is likely to be an implantable device or even a surgical procedure”
Hearing Aid Battery Maintenance
Sometimes moisture can accumulate inside a hearing aid; this moisture can be extremely damaging to the electronic circuitry in the hearing aid.
Here at thehearingaidsource.com we try to keep abreast of the latest information. Please note that our website has grown significantly! Finding the information you need is best achieved by using our handy search function in the upper right hand corner of this page.
To help avoid this collection of moisture, open the battery door at night when the hearing aid is not in use so air can circulate throughout the aid.
Other Hearing Aid Maintenance Tips
It is essential that your hearing aid remain dry.
“There are at least two hearing aid manufacturers claiming to make the smallest hearing aid in the world”
Avoid moisture at all costs; never let your hearing aid become wet. Never shower or bathe while wearing your hearing aid, and never wear it in a sauna, hot tub, or pool. If you are prone to sweating while you work out, remove you hearing aid before you set about to exercise.
Avoid exposing your hearing aid to direct heat. If your hearing aid gets wet, avoid placing it in a microwave oven or a conventional oven to dry it out. Instead, use the warm air from a hair dryer to slowly evaporate the moisture.
“However amazing the world’s smallest hearing aids are, they still might be the wrong hearing aids for you. Since you will be working with these devices every day, you need to be comfortable handling them, putting them on and taking them off”
Take care not to leave your hearing aid out in bright, direct sunlight, even indoors. Never leave you hearing aid in a hot car.
These hearing aid maintenance basics are not hard to keep up with. A few minutes a day of cleaning and care will help your hearing aid last longer and work better. Take care of your hearing aid, and it will take care of you.

If her income is very low she could qualify for the Starkey Hear Now program. They charge an application fee of just $100 per ear. The hearing aid, testing and fitting are all free after that. But she must have a low income and limited assets. There is a phone number you can call on the site for more information and to see if she qualifies.

Yes, you can recycle hearing aids and glasses! There are organizations that will take them, recondition them and then provide them to needy people. Try the Lions Organization. Also, there are hearing professionals that will take them in and redistribute them to needy people that fit that prescription. Good Luck

Osteoarthritis is loss of bone density. I can't imagine how that could lead to deafness. It's not like you're going to lose significant bone mass from those three tiny bones in your inner ear. I'd say that the only connection is that both are more likely to happen to people as they age, but there is no cause-and-effect relationship between them.

I do not know how to answer this from personal experience, but my cousin wears hearing aids and eyeglasses. She chose a light wire frame when she wears her eyeglasses, but uses contact lenses most of the time. I am not sure if contacts are an option for you, but you may want to consider it. If you can wear hearing aids that are not behind the ear, that may be another option for you as well.
Good Luck!

They are called in-the-ear monitors. They allow the musician to hear him or herself while performing, but still protect their hearing from excessive noise from the rest of the band/speakers.
If a musician was simply to plug their ears with earplugs, it would protect them from the loud noise but would alter they way they sound to themselves. Give it a try – put your fingers in your ears and talk. Your voice sounds much different. For a musician this is not an option so back in the days many would perform without ear protection. The consequence? Hearing loss later in life.
Digital technology has allowed musicians to protect themselves but still hear themselves (and their band) perform. The in-the-ear monitors are expensive but very much worth it when in the long run they protect their hearing.

I have used hearing aids for the past seven years. I initially paid $1600.00 for a set of Siemens inner ear digital hearing aids which worked well, but required constant care and tuning by the audiologist. Worse, there was only a 3 year warranty. After that, warranty costs from aftermarket repair facilities are on average $250.00 and up per year. Frustated by the hype and upon learning that the same hearing aid is sold in other countries for as low as $300.00, I started to search for an alternative. During my research I found the Acoustitone PRO that was designed by an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) doctor to be an affordable alternative. I paid $330 from Amazon for a set of two. Overall, they work almost as well as the much more expensive Siemens and other similar types, which are also ridiculously priced. They are FDA registered and Audiologist approved. They are also designed to be simple and rugged. I’ve had these for just over a month, and they have been trouble free. Best of all,…

No, once you start killing off the little hairs that pick up the vibrations you can't regrow them and your hearing gets worse. I went to a concert many years ago and was right up front by the speakers and I couldn't hear anything but ringing for a wk. Ever since then my hearing is shot and I have a hard time hearing people if they whisper or are a soft talker.
