yes they can. Basically nerve damage means the hearing loss is permanent and medical treatment with medication or surgery will not improve the hearing. So your only option of hearing better is to get a hearing aid to amplify the sounds for you.

Go to any private practice (a practice that is not a franchise). Most practices work with Phonak since it is one of the top manufacturers. Even if the place does not work with phonak- they will have a hearing aid vacuum and can clean your aid for you.

GJB2 gene or commonlycalled connexin 26 is inherited in autosomal recessive pattern.. that is both parents need to be carrying A defective gene in order the child be born deaf….
in your case, both u and child father are carriers. And each of you must have received the defective gene from one of your parent, ( who would also be carriers ) and the other parent most likely be neither a carrier or a deaf person..

Around $1,000.00 up. they aren't cheap, the smaller you go the more they cost.
And for all of you who listen to boom boxes, you are in for a treat around 40!
I have been totally deaf in my left ear since I was a kid. Its the inner ear so a hearing aid would not even do any good.
Good luck, I know the feeling.

The key is to see an audiologist. An audiologist has to have a minimum of a masters degree soon to be a doctorate degree to practice. They have extensive training on everything related to the ear as well as hearing aids and assistive devices. They are knowledgeable professionals who are not out there simply to make money selling hearing aids. They want to be sure that everyone has proper care for their hearing needs.

Look into the Starkey Fund – they base their coverage on financial need. She would be fit with Starkey hearing aids through this fund. Also check out the Lions Club as they sometimes fund purchases for people in their area in need. Check out your church too. Funds are in place for people in need for sure. You just have to do some leg work, make some calls and ask. They don't advertise these kinds of services. I am not sure if Michigan has hearing aid coverage for Medicaid recipients. But you may want to check that out as well.
You may want to see if the audiologist you work with could suggest some cheaper options, reconditioned instruments, or payment plans. Good luck!

Campaigners seek ban on tuneless horns, which they say put football fans at risk of tinnitus and long-term hearing loss To some, they were the definitive sound of the World Cup, a celebration of African culture and must-have momento of this summer’s football festival; to others, they were just an irritating din. But now campaigners for hard-of-hearing people are urging football clubs in Britain to keep their stadiums free of the drone of the dreaded vuvuzelas when the new season kicks off next month. They are warning that the blaring, horn-like sound from the instruments is so loud that fans of the nation’s favourite sport could suffer permanent hearing loss if fellow spectators at a match try to recreate the atmosphere from South Africa. Vivienne Michael, chief executive of the charity Deafness Research UK, warned: “These tuneless trumpets can emit sounds in excess of 130 decibels, equivalent to a jumbo jet taking off, and as the national charity concerned with deafness research and…

I have had hearing aids since I was 3 years old. I am now over 85% deaf without them so hopefully I can help
It depends on your hearing loss. Since the doctor apparently has given you the choice of which model to wear, your hearing cannot be as bad as mine.
There is a difference as to the kind of aids that go in the ear:
ITC (in the canal) hearing aids are the small ones that some users can wear if their hearing is not bad (such as in your case). These fit completely in the canal and are taken out by grabbing a thin wire (almost resembles fishing line)and pulling the aid out of your ear.
ITE (in the ear) hearing aids, such as I wear, are for the more hard of hearing as they provide better amplification. These seem to be the industrial norm nowadays.
OTE (over the ear) hearing aids are bulky and cumbersome. Your age should be taken into account. I wore these when I was a child as they provide the Most amplification. However, because of their size and the hose that has to go from your ear mold to the aparattus behind your ear sticks out, alot of people dont like these type. Also, if you are active and get sweaty alot or work in a job environment where you dont want anything to get in the way, I wouldnt recommend these.
When I was a child I wore these until I was 18. At 18 I got the ITE hearing aids (they say your ears stop growing at around that age). If you try to outfit a child with ITE hearing aids, you would be going in every 6 months for new molds. A costly venture.
So, from what I can tell, your best bet is the ITC or ITE hearing aid. The ITC aid can be cumbersome to deal with, as it is so small.
My ITE hearing aid fits inside my entire ear and is visible in plain view. However they are still hardly noticeable. Whatever option you choose, make sure to request DIGITAL hearing aids. These allow for programmable settings and make it easier to use digital technology (such as cellphones) without feedback and noise. They are pretty much standard now.
The brand I have is oritron. They come with a 3 year warranty which is a big plus!

You can say that you’re met oral deaf children that are behind in school. I can interpret that is they they got stuck in a mental tug of war between the ASL and oral education that got them confused. This time there wont be a tug of war as we’ve found away to prevent them from getting themselves exposed to a dependency language. Of course hearing loss doesn’t affect intelligence. But you see, civilization is advancing and its high time the deaf community starts advancing with it.

So, how do you store your hearing aids? Can I just toss them in a Pelican case with a Dri-Brik and have done with it?
I’m picking up my first pair of hearing aids tomorrow– Phonak BTEs with the little tube and dome setup. I see a lot of talk about the Dry and Store system and its boxes full of UV lights and blowers and desiccants. Is this the standard? What do the rest of you do to store these things?
I already own a Pelican 1050 case (clear top, not submersible but generally watertight, rubber base and gasket); I don’t suppose I could just chuck a Dri-Brik in there with my aids and be set? How the heck big is a Dri-Brik anyhow, and does it only work with the Dry and Store box?
I’m clueless. Help me out.

FMs AND HEARING AIDS ARE TWO DIFFERENT THINGS
FM systems and assistive listening devices (ALDs) are not just used in theaters and churches anymore. It is your right under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to access needed modifications such as a taper recorder, preferential seating, a note taker or FM system.
PLEASE NOTE THAT BILATERAL HEARING AIDS IMPROVE LOCALIZATION AND AMPLIFIES SOUNDS… INCLUDING SOUNDS IN SPECIFIC FREQUENCIES BASED ON YOUR INDIVIDUAL AUDIOGRAM.
FM SYSTEMS JUST AMPLIFIES THE SPEAKERS VOICE WHICH REDUCES THE BACKGROUND NOISE.
There are several types of FM systems that can be used in the classroom. FM systems are composed of a FM transmitter and a receiver.
The FM transmitter or the microphone and its components are used by your professors. The idea is to increase the speech signal and to decrease the background or ambient noise that your hearing aids may pick up.
The FM receiver can be an ear level receiver such as hearing aid audio boots. A boot is a small sleeve that fits over the end of a BTE hearing aid. The boot inserts the audio signal into the hearing aids' Direct Audio Input (DAI) interface. Not all BTE hearing aids have an audio boot interface.
Other receivers include: headphones/ear buds (typically for children with CAPD or ADD), a desktop speaker or a sound field system located around the classroom (everyone benefits from this).
Depending on the type you buy, FMs can be fairly inexpensive to purchase. Here's just one of many links:

This will depend on your life style. Perfect hearing is -10 to 10, Normal hearing is 0 to -10 and Average is -10 to -20 dBs. Some people that are involved in Music will want a hearing aid if they are at -20 because they will be needing to hear some frequiencies more clearly.
GENERALY speaking, if you are at -30 and below in frequencies 250, 500, 750, 1000, 1200, 2000 —- You will want a digital hearing aid.

Nope, it seems insurance companies don't consider hearing to be essential. The government I think gives assistance for children who need hearing aids, but us older people no one cares about.
Now this may or may not help, but there are some types of hearing aids that can be used with some success for certain types of hearing loss.
Next thing, hearing aids are not all one would think they are for that amount of money. When I am in a quiet place and am talking to someone, I don't need a hearing aid. When I am in a nosiy place and am talking to someone I found the hearing aid made it worse, because it amplified the noise as well as the person speech, so it ended up a wash.
I spent 2K and stopped wearing mine. Has to tell you something.

Beethoven didn't become deaf until much later in his life. Before this, he had already mastered the art of composition. He also had perfect pitch, which meant that when he saw a note, he could hear it perfectly in his head. Unfortunately, his deafness caused his personality to turn more angry and sad than it already naturally was (because of the physical and mental abuse his father had inflicted on him as a child). Beethoven had quite a hard life — I think he took his emotions and turned them into something beautiful!
BTW – Why does it always seem like the "top contributors" are the rudest?
