once the hair cells are damaged they are damaged. there is no magical-medicinal cure for a sensory/ neural hearing loss.
buck up and get your self some hearing aids. if you have a high frequency loss. make sure they have directional microphones and at the very least 8 channels so the audiologist has greater programming ease.

I don't have any experience myself with this sort of thing, but I'd say yes, they forget/they somehow overlook it that quickly, their thoughts bounding on to something else, whatever they're talking about (Especially the more self absorbed people). They're (We are, I guess) so used to communicating a certain way. I, however, would like to think I'd remember and would be considerate enough to be careful not confuse you like that lol! It must be pretty awkward and frustrating for you when people start to do that.
But please be patient with people that can hear, they don't understand your disability and they don't understand what it's like for you having your disability. It can sort of go right over their heads sometimes I'd say.
