I don’t think that controverts my analogy. My analogy is about the type of relationship, not whether I’d sit at the same proverbial table. Family doesn’t mean that there is total agreement; and there are some families that have people that don’t talk to each other. I can see that here.

I wonder if there’s a UK/US divide in academic vs industry salaries. I got a 50% raise in moving from academia to industry, and my personal collection of anecdotes says that’s on the low end if anything. (Note that it says more about my academic salary than my current one, which I think is fair.)

If the case is not settled there will be a preliminary hearing. There is no jury at that hearing, just a judge. Son will be called as a witness and asked questions about what he saw. If the judge finds that there is sufficient evidence, then there will later be a trial. Again, if it is not settled, he will be called as a witness and asked questions about what he saw.

No. Personally I leave my Facebook status on single, even when I'm dating someone. I do this because whenever I broke up with someone, I found it especially painful to announce it to the entire world via Facebook, having to field condolences…and then whenever I started dating someone and it was all new, it felt almost like I was jinxing myself when I changed my status. I agree with him; leave Facebook out of your relationship. It's great for causing unnecessary drama. Your five hundred best friends do not need to know who you are dating.
