This study is the first step towards the development of a drug against the entire herpesvirus family.

Well, I'm not too sure about what he did for geometry, but he did a lot for Calculus. By help Calculus, I mean he co-DISCOVERED IT. Integration of a revolution, a Calculus term that means finding the volume of a strange shapes, is practically Geometry, so you can say he help in that way. Pretty much all integration is just finding areas or volumes, so you talk a lot about that. For example, the area between Y=x^5 and Y=x^2 from 0 to 1 (where they intersect) is .1666…

Just about every member of the the Senate Judiciary Committee seems amped up to pass some version of a controversial anti-piracy bill, the Combatting Online Infringements and Counterfeits Act (COICA). The bill would allow the government to quickly shut down websites that are accused of copyright infringement or the sale of counterfeit goods. At a hearing today, the senators heard testimony from two corporations—Verizon and Visa—whose assistance is seen as vital towards making such a system work. Lawyers from both companies said they’re willing to cooperate, but have concerns about a law that might go too far.

Newton did "Stand on the shoulders of giants", as he readily acknowledged. But he was also a genius, in the true sense of the word. He singlehandedly invented Calculus, because it was necessary to solve the problems he was working on (but which, of course, was based on algebra and geometry, which were developed by many others before him).

Galileo and Kepler were also inspirations, in particular, giving Newton a framework of laws (based on measurement) that his theories needed to agree with (and therefore, a "test-bed" for his mathematical conclusions).

Not sure I would call these "Stepping-stones" however. For Newton, they were more like trampolines!

The taxi situation sucks in San Francisco — it’s way too hard to find a cab, way too often. But at least the city is acknowledging that there’s a problem and wants to improve the situation. So it put on a hackathon. On Saturday, taxi drivers, tech guys, and designers gathered at the California College of the Arts to solve everything from dispatch to communication issues. There’s not enough supply for the demand in this city, said San Francisco’s chief innovation officer Jay Nath. Taximagic co-founder Tim Csontos, who was leading one of the teams, told us: “The iPhone made our company. We started with Blackberry. When we launched with the iPhone app in December 2008, it became the top 5 travel app and we knew we had a business. Now we are at 4 million downloads.” However, at the hackathon, Csontos was focused on “hearing about the ideas people have to solve these problems” and hoping to tap the creative talent at the event. He even brought two other employees with him and split off…
