Where I am a preliminary hearing is only to establish probable cause. More than likely your son will have to testify. The prosecutor will ask questions and then the defense will ask questions. From what I have seen most preliminary hearings are done (because they are required by statute) and the defense tries to turn it into a Discovery matter.
Meaning the defense will try and find out what your son’s story is. If that story changes between the prelim and the trial it would undermine the credibility of the witness.
The prosecutor’s office will probably have some there before court to talk to you all. If not, so long as his story remains the same nothing to worry about.
I have heard prosecutors tell witnesses to answer in one word answers, Short, short, short answers. This is not a trial for the Beyond a Reasonable Doubt stuff. This is only probable cause (about 85%) that the person charged did the crime. Most I have seen get Certified to circuit court almost always.
Yes, if it is certified to circuit court then he will testify there, that will be the trial. Most are plea bargained away early on so there won’t be a trial. More than likely the defendant has a record and his attorney is just testing the waters at the prelim to see about his bargaining power for the plea.
Best wishes to you both and extra kudos for your son. Tell the truth, if he is certain tell him to be certain just don’t go down rabbit holes, stick with the questioned asked.

hi doc my eardrum is ruptured it’s my left ear its been ruptured twice once when i was maybe 10 and now. I’ts been 1 month it’s really itchy and the medicine’s i take is helpful but when im on the 6th day of taking this medicine my ear just felt swelling and i feel like there’s something block inside when i try to clean it there’s pus! it’s really itchy my hearing is not that low im not having fever too! what’s wih this itching feeling will my ear heals on it’s own even being ruptured twice?

u can always do a power point presentation on all those things. use different pages to use different things you're going to talk about and add at least one visual aid that u think fits that category.
or you could make a bunch of posters then make it into a video. talk a little about everything u said which those visual aids u listed. if it has to be a presentation in front of of people, just do that without the video part
