FOR some members of Sri Lanka’s Sinhalese majority, the defeat of the country’s Tamil Tiger rebels last year belongs to a glorious martial tradition. As the architect of this triumph, President Mahinda Rajapaksa, they said, was a second Dutugemunu, a Sinhalese king of the second century BC who slew an Indian Tamil invader from his war-elephant, Kandula. The Sinhalese Buddhist clergy proclaimed Mr Rajapaksa the “Universally Glorious Ruler of the Sinhalese”. So it was natural that Mr Rajapaksa would have a banknote—Sri Lanka’s colourful new 1,000-rupee note, worth about $9—printed with his image, arms raised in triumph. The reverse of the note, however, reveals a surprise. It depicts five soldiers hoisting the Sri Lankan flag, looking remarkably like the iconic photograph of five marines and a seaman raising Old Glory over Iwo Jima in 1945. In a country seething with resentment against the American and European governments that dared criticise Mr Rajapaksa’s brutal war tactics, this…

North2016 is right-on, but I’ll go a step further: the whole US govt has become a big tangled hollow ball of greedy liars weaving and spinning lies to dupe citizens on behalf of corporations, the fed, and the department of defense. Shut your mind and go have babies and pay taxes! Better yet, enlist in the imperial military! And don’t forget to go deeply into debt! And if you have any money left, spend it at Christmas time. That’s all she wrote.

In her new Vanity Fair cover story, “The Help” star Emma Stone (rocking her blonde Gwen Stacy hair) says that her only vices are wine, sugar, and occasional black tar heroin.  “That’s pretty much it, the heroin, the sugar, and the wine–nothing too crazy,” she jokes. Immediately, we want to be her BFF.Though she’s wearing a bikini on the cover, Stone endears herself to us further by saying that she usually wears a one-piece to the beach. She still hasn’t gotten used to the attention she’s been getting from paparazzi since “Easy A” became a hit and she was cast in the new Spider-Man movie opposite Andrew Garfield. One paparazzo, she says, tried to strike a deal with her once — he’d delete her photos if she called him next time she went outside in her pajamas. “I didn’t even know that was a thing–that people would call them,” she tells the mag. Oh, she’s such a newbie. She’s also a high school drop-out (though she’s taking classes again now) — which she doesn’t regret, because she did “Superbad” while her high school friends were slogging out their senior year. That doesn’t mean she’s never fallen victim to the traps of the bored student, though — she admits that she had to delete her Facebook account after developing a shameful addiction to FarmVille. She also discusses what she calls hitting “rock bottom.” No, don’t worry, she was totally kidding about the heroin. For Stone, rock bottom was an audition for NBC’s “Heroes.” She was waiting to go in for her audition when she heard the execs tell the actress who tried out before her, “You are our pick … On a scale of 1 to 10 you’re an 11.”Yep. Hayden Panettiere. “I went home and just had this meltdown,” Stone admits.

Though they look different, many genetics problems are also long standing problems in mathematics. Many of the solutions that have been developed for genetics problems have been quickly adapted to solve problems in other fields as well. It is even possible that more engineering problems have been solved by geneticists than genetics problems solved by engineers.

"Genetic algorithms" – an algorithm technique inspired by how organism populations evolve, is now used to solve many other problems, such as risk and threat assessment, scheduling problems, timetables, route planning, etc.

It was the split heard ’round the world: Chris Harrison, host of “The Bachelor”, announced on Thursday he is getting a divorce.
After 18 years of marriage, Harrison confirmed that he and his wife Gwen are officially splitting:
“Though we have made this incredibly difficult decision to separate, our love and mutual respect remain, and we look forward to sharing in the lives of our wonderful children.”
18 years is a long time — in fact, an eternity in “Bachelor” terms. Despite playing matchmaker to literally hundreds (!) of uber bronzed, publicity-loving, good ol’ American kids on “The Bachelor” franchise for ten years, we gather Chris is a little rusty in the dating department. How will our favorite TV host fair as a bachelor himself?
Luckily, he’s got the look down pat. Here are his top five style qualities that make Chris the most eligible bachelor this side of ABC primetime. Perhaps we will see Harrison giving out his own final rose someday soon?
