Most people haven’t got the slightest idea how they hear or why they have a hearing loss. Self-diagnosis of requiring hearing aids or helpful neighbors doing more harm is rampant. The more this type of information gets out the better.

Noise exposure over 90 dBA for over 8 hours is enough to begin to damage your outer hair cells in your cochlea. Over time that damage will become cumulative and permanent and result in loss from the 2-6 kHz range (higher pitched sounds). Impact/impulse noise can cause immediate hearing loss if it is sufficiently loud.
If people have to shout over the noise to be heard, its probably too loud to spend extended lengths of time in that environment without suffering a temporary hearing loss. If you're in doubt you're better off wearing ear plugs.

The Sun Will Still Shine Tomorrow 1 Category: Books Price: $11.99, Version: 1 (iTunes) Description: Ashley Clark had given the whole of his working life to the Metropolitan Police. The 7/7 tube station bombings eventually broke his resolve and his love affair with London. He could have prevented the bombings, saved all those lives. He transfers back to Northumbria Police and his native Newcastle. During a routine disciplinary hearing, Ashley realises the job has changed and for once his temper gets the better of him. He is out of the job, back on Civvy Street. Within a few days, an old friend’s mother begs him for help. Her son has disappeared off the face of the earth and the investigation points to Holy Island, a small hamlet off the north-east coast of England. Ashley goes undercover, like his hero Sherlock Holmes; why not? It was a role he played to the full in London and nobody does it better. He comes across a Freemason-type organisation, the Island Keepers, fiercely protective…

Where I am a preliminary hearing is only to establish probable cause. More than likely your son will have to testify. The prosecutor will ask questions and then the defense will ask questions. From what I have seen most preliminary hearings are done (because they are required by statute) and the defense tries to turn it into a Discovery matter.
Meaning the defense will try and find out what your son’s story is. If that story changes between the prelim and the trial it would undermine the credibility of the witness.
The prosecutor’s office will probably have some there before court to talk to you all. If not, so long as his story remains the same nothing to worry about.
I have heard prosecutors tell witnesses to answer in one word answers, Short, short, short answers. This is not a trial for the Beyond a Reasonable Doubt stuff. This is only probable cause (about 85%) that the person charged did the crime. Most I have seen get Certified to circuit court almost always.
Yes, if it is certified to circuit court then he will testify there, that will be the trial. Most are plea bargained away early on so there won’t be a trial. More than likely the defendant has a record and his attorney is just testing the waters at the prelim to see about his bargaining power for the plea.
Best wishes to you both and extra kudos for your son. Tell the truth, if he is certain tell him to be certain just don’t go down rabbit holes, stick with the questioned asked.

President Obama signed into law today the 21st Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act, legislation that will help people with disabilities access and participate in the digital world. The law establishes federal guidelines that will require the telecommunications industry to make sure that the devices they build and programs they transmit are accessible to those with hearing and vision impairments. The new law requires a number of measures including an improved UI for smart phones that includes verbal commands, captioning for online TV programming, and compatibility between Internet telephone calls and hearing aids. Sponsor As the President noted in the signing, the law “sets new standards so that Americans with disabilities can take advantage of the technology our economy depends on. And that’s especially important in today’s economy, when every worker needs the necessary skills to compete for the jobs of the future.” Although some argue that these standards will likely…

Joan, I can’t speak for anyone else (of course), but I pretty much see this whole thread as encouraging Derrick to make the best of his current situation. I’m sorry it doesn’t come across that way to you, but I’m pretty sure it did to Derrick. When I’ve been academically frustrated, knowing other people got my frustrations, and felt equally snarktastic, and wanted to laugh with me rather than scold me for being negative, let me be a lot more kind and open-hearted/minded about that academic experience. We don’t all encourage the same way, you know?

As a clarinet player myself, to play it successfully one has to hear the tone well. Clarinets are very finicky and the slightest change can throw off your tone and you need to be able to hear it. Sometimes – depending on how much brass there is in the band – it can drown out clarinets – so she'll have trouble hearing herself play, I bet.

Alright, we’ve just laid eyes on some internal Samsung documents and can bring you the official names and specs of the successors to the Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab. Firstly, the Galaxy S II will tout a 4.3-inch, 800 x 480 Super AMOLED Plus display, a 1GHz dual-core Orion / Exynos processor, NFC, Bluetooth 3.0, and 24Mbps HSPA+ connectivity. All those stats were leaked earlier this morning, along with the image above, and we’ve once again seen the 8.49mm thickness for this device, although we now believe it is the measurement at its thinnest point — it’s likely that the S II will fatten up to 9.9mm, presumably to accommodate the camera module, one of the last remaining parts of smartphone construction that require extra girth (NFC being another). As to the Galaxy Tab II, it is indeed the 10.1-inch Honeycomb tablet we’ve been hearing so much about, with the added bonus of it being a Google Experience Device. That should mean no Samsung-derived skin customizations atop the stock Android…
