I’m not normally much of a soccer fan, but the World Cup doesn’t happen every day and it’s pretty interesting to see all the excitement and high level of play. I personally think the rules need a little tweaking to reduce the tendency toward 0-0 and 1-1 ties, but I suppose the sport couldn’t have so many billions of fans without doing something right. In honor of the World Cup, let’s do a quick example of just how tough the game can be. In soccer of course the players are generally prohibited from touching the ball with their hands – hence, football in most of the world. But in fact the players can and do use anything but the arms to manipulate the ball during play. If you watch the game, you’ll notice the players using their heads to hit the ball in mid-air when kicking is not possible. This can be a pretty traumatic thing – as in many contact sports the cumulative effect on the brain can be serious in certain cases. Let’s do the math and calculate roughly just how much of a whack…

A bench of Justices G S Singhvi and A K Ganguly asked both the parties to explore “if there is any possibility or chance of reconciliation”. Advocate Mukul Rohatgi, who appeared for Shinde, submitted that there was no chance of coming together of the two and it was a case of “irretrievable breakdown of marriage.” The apex court was hearing a petition filed by Shinde seeking divorce without the consent of her husband, citing “irretrievable breakdown of marriage.” The bench told the lawyers to “make an attempt for amicable settlement”.Senior advocate Chander Uday Singh, who appeared for Shinde’s husband Sanjay Pahadia, submitted that the couple had been speaking to each other but he was not certain whether there was any positive development. Pahadia has been living in New York and had a meeting with Shinde in the last few weeks, Singh said.Rohatgi said Shinde has been living separately for the last five years and her husband has been resisting divorce after consenting for it in the…

BP admits lobbying to get convicted Lockerbie bomber Abdel Basset al-Megrahi released in order to protect a $900,000,000 deal to drill off the coast of Libya. In the future, we’ll probably be hearing a lot more about the controversy over BP’s admitted role (acknowledged long ago by officials in the UK) in negotiating for al-Megrahi’s release on compassionate grounds that have since been called into question (as previously discussed here). At the time of al-Megrahi’s release by a Scottish Judge, US officials were sharply critical of the decision to release al-Megrahi. Investigations into the arrangement are currently underway in the US congress.

I live in a fairly noisy neighborhood and have a similar problem. When I want a great night's rest, I put in my headphones that help cancel out sound. They're ear buds so they are comfortable to sleep in and then I get the perk of having my favorite sleepytime music…Enya. My husband doesn't like listening to music to get to sleep, so he uses regular earplugs.

BTW the headphones I use are made my JVC. You can get them many places in many colors (I have red to match my ipod). They also come with two sizes of foam to help with the fit.
