Sudden hearing loss might be tied to an underlying sleep disorder that interrupts breathing, suggests a new study from Taiwan. Consulting a large health insurance database, researchers found that people who'd suffered sudden deafness were more likely to have a previous diagnosis of sleep apnea than a comparison group without hearing loss.

In my experience, after having used hearing aids for ten plus years, I have found name brand batteries like Rayovac or Duracell to be the longest lasting batteries. I tried out a few really cheap brands for a while like icelltec, but noticed i would get duds and batteries that only lasted two or three days. I get my batteries online now from Cheap Hearing Aid Batteries Canada but feel free to research around for the best prices online. It's nice because you just receive the batteries in the mail.

It can... depending on if it's progressive or not. Many genetic hearing losses are not progressive. Some are... it's really hard to tell you either way. It's something to talk to your audiologist about. I'm sure you'll get a follow-up eval done in 6 months, and that will tell how much or if it's progressing.

It may also be something that you should talk to a genetic counselor about... depending on the gene affected (if it is genetic), that will tell you if it will progress. Also know that hearing losses are extremely variable. Just hang in there for the time being. If you were only diagnosed at 15, I'm assuming your loss isn't too bad at this point. Do whatever you can to learn about it and why it happened. :)

I am not aware of the type of report you are looking for, but I will mention in my own experience working with HI children that children are MUCH tougher on hearing aids than adults, so anything that gets rave reviews from a parent is going to stand up to almost anything an adult can throw at it. My daughter and I have both worn the Phonak Claro and Oticon Syncro hearing aids and been very pleased with their durability.

If you are in an area with high humidity, you may want to consider some type of dehumidifier solution (Dry and Store comes to mind) as the water may be contributing to your frequent repairs.

the older generation does not like the new technology of today...they are old fashioned and feel if they use it they are surrendereing to old age and it is hard for some peoiple to accept...if he does not want any device to help, try to face him when you talk so he can see your mouth and talk a little slower then you do not have to "YELL"!take your time, old people do not like to be rushed or told what to do! they are people that have been doing their own thing for...him it would be 92 years and he wants to continue to do his own thing!

I have received Digital Hearing Aids, & would like to know how to change the filters in them. Since they NEED it about every 2 or 3 months, should I change them MONTHLY whether theyneed it or not? Or should I just change them when they NEED it?

New research from the University of Sheffield has revealed that the molecular mechanism underlying deafness is caused by a mutation of a specific microRNA called miR-96. The discovery could provide the basis for treating progressive hearing loss and deafness.
Basically anyone with profound hearing loss that has a properly formed cochlea and properly functioning auditory nerve will probably be a candidate for a cochlear implant. People who lost their hearing due to CMV, rubella, meningitis (if implanted within weeks of onset of illness), genetic factors, Rh factors, or premature birth can probably be eligible for a cochlear implant.

Prenatal treatment of congenital toxoplasmosis with antibiotics might substantially reduce the proportion of infected fetuses that develop serious neurological sequelae (brain damage, epilepsy, deafness, blindness, or developmental problems) or die, and could be particularly effective in fetuses whose mothers acquired Toxoplasma gondii, the parasite that causes toxoplasmosis, during the first third of pregnancy. These are the findings of an observational study by Ruth Gilbert from the UCL Institute of Child Health, London, UK, and colleagues and published in this week's PLoS Medicine...

"According to many experts, we may soon find ourselves using fuel cells to generate electrical power for all sorts of devices we use every day. A fuel cell is a device that uses a source of fuel, such as hydrogen, and an oxidant to create electricity from an electrochemical process. Much like the batteries that are found under the hoods of automobiles or in flashlights, a fuel cell converts chemical energy to electrical energy. All fuel cells have the same basic configuration; an electrolyte and two electrodes. But there are different types of fuel cells, based mainly on what kind of electrolyte they use. Many combinations of fuel and oxidant are also possible. The fuel could be diesel or methanol, while air, chlorine, or chlorine dioxide may serve as oxidants. Most fuel cells in use today, however, use hydrogen and oxygen as the chemicals. Fuel cells have three main applications: transportation, portable uses, and stationary installations. In the future, fuel cells could power our cars, with hydrogen replacing the petroleum fuel that is used in most vehicles today. Many vehicle manufacturers are actively researching and developing transportation fuel cell technologies. Stationary fuel cells are the largest, most powerful fuel cells. They are designed to provide a clean, reliable source of on-site power to hospitals, banks, airports, military bases, schools, and homes. Fuel cells can power almost any portable device or machine that uses batteries. Unlike a typical battery, which eventually goes dead, a fuel cell continues to produce energy as long as fuel and oxidant are supplied. Laptop computers, cellular phones, video recorders, and hearing aids could be powered by portable fuel cells. Fuel cells have strong benefits over conventional combustion-based technologies currently used in many power plants and cars. They produce much smaller quantities of greenhouse gases and none of the air pollutants that create smog and cause health problems. If pure hydrogen is used as a fuel, fuel cells emit only heat and water as a byproduct. Hydrogen-powered fuel cells are also far more energy efficient than traditional combustion technologies. The biggest hurdle for fuel cells today is cost. Fuel cells cannot yet compete economically with more traditional energy technologies, though rapid technical advances are being made. Although hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe, it is difficult to store and distribute. Canisters of pure hydrogen are readily available from hydrogen producers, but as of now, you can't just fill up with hydrogen at a local gas station. Many people do have access to natural gas or propane tanks at their houses, however, so it is likely that these fuels will be used to power future home fuel cells. Methanol, a liquid fuel, is easily transportable, like gasoline, and could be used in automobile fuel cells. However, also like gasoline, methanol produces polluting carbon dioxide."

Most people can't sing very well despite having faked their way through singing in high school choirs or as a part of a church choir. Typically, we only sing loudly when we're completely alone, such as while showering or in our automobiles with the windows rolled up and the radio turned up. If you feel you may be tone deaf, you are by no means alone. The tone deaf make up around one out of every seven individuals.

I'm 76 widower. I use iCom with my iPhone 3g. People see me dining alone, talking to my great grand daughter who is in Japan using Skype (internet phone). They often remark "see that little old man who has an imaginary friend or is talking to himself. But it makes a good pickup line. "Want call me and talk to me on my hearing aids?' If she does I have her phone number!
