Related question (sorry to sidetrack) — how do they compute the divorce rate? Suppose that in 2000 there were exactly 2 million people who got married in the U.S. (1 million couples). And let’s say that now, 10 years, later, 100,000 of those 1 million marriages ended in divorce, and another 100,000 ended because one of the partners died. (There are only two outcomes for a marriage: It either ends by divorce or other dissolution, or ends because death did it part.) The other 800,000 marriages in my hypothetical are still going on. Do we call the divorce rate 50% because half of the 200k that ended were ended by divorce, or 10% because only 100k of the 1MM marriages ended?

Sound occurs over a wide spectrum of frequencies. The human ear is sensitive to a frequency band withing that spectrum. Since sounds occur at different frequencies, you will not be able to hear the sounds at the high end. The frequency that dogs can hear covers a different range. That is why a dog can respond to a human voice, but also to a silent dog whistle which is too high of a frequency for humans. The most common frequency hearing loss for men is the same frequency that their wives speak.

1.) Sarge is on the money with suggestion of protecting your hearing. Anytime you have ringing in your ears or a diagnosed hearing loss you need to be vigilant about wearing ear protection to clubs, concerts, mowing the lawn, using power tools etc. Try the ones from the drugstore. If you want to invest a little money you can see an audiologist and get custom ones made for about $50 to $100 for a pair (yes protect both ears even though only one ear has hearing loss). The cusom ones can be made in a clear material that is inconspicuous and people won't notice in your ear too much.
2.) Monitor your hearing and get it tested every one or two years. Hearing loss generally progresses usually very slowly. If you ever notice a sudden change in hearing see someone ASAP!

Don't be so cynical. Every hearing has an appeals process. So if you get railroaded in the first hearing, you can appeal it. I suggest you put on a rigorous defense and prepare for the worst. Just make it clear that a loss will be appealed and sometimes they will back off.

It could be many of several things. The preliminary hearing is just to determine whether the judge agrees that there is sufficient evidence to take the case to trial. Prior to the actually trial, there will likely be hearings on several pre-trial motions.
The lawyer will likely file a motion to dismiss, and I am guessing that is what the next hearing will address. The lawyer will probably also file motions to exclude evidence or testimony. He may file a motion to change venue to a more amiable jurisdiction. There are many pre-trial motions that a lawyer can file. Most of these will result in hearings. Some of the motions may be granted, and some may be denied.

Best answer: “I don’t know. Probably very bad for you. And they’d be very cross with you.” If the fear of disgruntled CERN researchers (what’s the Greek “-phobia” word for that, I wonder) isn’t enough to make you keep your hands to yourself, rest assured, nobody thinks such an adventure would work out for you, health-wise. One of the scientists interviewed here mentions that particles traveling close to the speed of light start emitting synchrotron radiation, something he calls “very nasty”. (Note the fun look of terror in his eyes that goes along with this pronouncement.) And with good reason. Consider Anatoli Petrovich Bugorski, a Russian researcher who accidentally stuck his head into the proton bean of a synchrotron in 1978. The good news: He survived. The bad news: The left side of his face swelled up and peeled off. In the long term, Bugorski has had to deal with hearing loss, fatigue, facial paralysis and seizures. Conclusion (at least, until somebody tries it on Mythbusters):…

This will depend on your life style. Perfect hearing is -10 to 10, Normal hearing is 0 to -10 and Average is -10 to -20 dBs. Some people that are involved in Music will want a hearing aid if they are at -20 because they will be needing to hear some frequiencies more clearly.
GENERALY speaking, if you are at -30 and below in frequencies 250, 500, 750, 1000, 1200, 2000 —- You will want a digital hearing aid.
There is an American Guy in South America that I bought My Aids from. He works in Peru helping the Poor and the 3rd world people hear. He has a company called AccuToneUSA and he told me to send my Ear Impressions to Him. He build me 2 VERY nice 32 channel 64 band hearing aids for about $1200 total. These hearing aids retail in the USA for $4000 each. So you should contact him if you have any questions. his name is Doug at accutone, and his email is

Im looking for a responsible, loving nanny for our 5-year-old daughter. I am an elementary school teacher looking for someone to begin full-time very soon (7 a.m. -4 p.m. Monday through Friday) with the occasional late night (7 p.m. ) for trainings, open house night, and conferences. Along with caring for our daughter, we need someone who is willing to do very light house-cleaning, (vacuuming, unloading the dishwasher, etc.), prepping for dinner when needed, and letting our dog in and out as necessary.
We look forward to hearing from you!

IMPOSSIBLE!
once the hair cells are damaged they are damaged. there is no magical-medicinal cure for a sensory/ neural hearing loss.
buck up and get your self some hearing aids. if you have a high frequency loss. make sure they have directional microphones and at the very least 8 channels so the audiologist has greater programming ease.

You might have to simply prevent him from getting to it in the first place. I've known people who have turned around onesies (they do make larger sizes), turning around zip pajamas and running duct tape up the zipper so he can't unzip it.
You may need to shorten nap time and wake him up so he doesn't have time to get into it. Or put a very sensitive monitor in his room and go in as soon as he wakes up.
Chin up. I can only imagine how frustrating this is for you.

You can basically do anything that does not require a phone. I'm hearing impaired also, and as long as I steer clear of jobs requiring long phone hours (i.e. 911 dispatcher like your past position, customer service rep, telemarketer) I've never had a problem. I've worked in a variety of different positions, industries, and settings, and the key is just making sure that you are up front with your supervisor and anyone else you feel needs to know.
Every single supervisor I've had has offered to work with me to ensure I have the tools to perform my job to the best of my abilities, hearing impairment or not.To avoid any discrimination on the basis of disability, employers are bound by law to provide you with reasoanble accommodation. For instance, my supervisor reviews conference calls with me after the fact (in a very respectful way) to ensure nothing was missed. Also, I primarily use email to communicate and am exempt from all those "pick up the phone and talk to someone instead of impersonally emailing them" lectures.
Basically, you can do anything. Follow your passions and be up front about your hearing impairment – that's the best advice I have.

Wait, I grew up in Israel and heard about this in the mid 90s. The problem is that cell phones are so important to our daily lives that we can’t give them up. I think the headset thing should become mandatory though (mandatory to provide and wear), since its only about the distance between the phone and the head.

I have no idea what you are asking, but it seems like you want to know why people who can hear sometimes act strangely around deaf people. To that, I say it is quite like when an English speaker attempts to speak to a non-English speaker who looks like they should be able to speak English, before realizing they cannot. It's instant embarassment, and quite confusing. You don't know exactly what to say at that point but, "sorry."
