I used to have a cockatiel before my mother took him and the cage outside and he flew away. ;-(. But when my bird used to do it, it was in between his preening sessions. He had a hairball or in this case, a featherball. Usually what I do is just let him go to his cage and drink some water out of his cup, or just let him get done doing that and it'll go away. Either that or he always gags on stuff. Nothing really to worry about. All cockatiels/birds do it. Choking or signs&symptoms of throwing up is a whole different story.

Earplugs are cheap at the store. I also have trouble being around kids when their parents aren’t parenting well. I am never without earplugs. They are cheap and very useful. Is this “friend” there at your behest or that of your parents? From what you’ve related of it here online, it really seems like he’s not properly appreciative of your hospitality and should be given the heave ho. Yeah, he may be in a hard situation but most normal people who are in hard situations and getting offered help from friends go out of their way to be good guests and it doesn’t sound like this guy is doing that. Don’t let him shrug it off. It’s your house – your rules.
