The problem is that you are overly sensitive to certain sounds, which sounds like recruitment or hyper accusis. Therefore it is important that a hearing aid take this into account and refuse to over amplify in these specific sensitive regions of your hearing. In older people who lose their hearing they do lose some quality of life because people stop talking to them on the same level—it's more superficial because it's harder for people with normal hearing to keep repeating themselves, so they cut things short. Hearing aids don't help with all types of hearing lose, so senior citizens with bad hearing get less and less quality time with others and to enjoy things like watching TV, music, movies, etc.
I don't know if I'd say there is a correlation between this and low self-esteem, though. I think the correlation would more likely be between hearing loss and depression.

This will depend on your life style. Perfect hearing is -10 to 10, Normal hearing is 0 to -10 and Average is -10 to -20 dBs. Some people that are involved in Music will want a hearing aid if they are at -20 because they will be needing to hear some frequiencies more clearly.

They are called in-the-ear monitors. They allow the musician to hear him or herself while performing, but still protect their hearing from excessive noise from the rest of the band/speakers.
If a musician was simply to plug their ears with earplugs, it would protect them from the loud noise but would alter they way they sound to themselves. Give it a try – put your fingers in your ears and talk. Your voice sounds much different. For a musician this is not an option so back in the days many would perform without ear protection. The consequence? Hearing loss later in life.
Digital technology has allowed musicians to protect themselves but still hear themselves (and their band) perform. The in-the-ear monitors are expensive but very much worth it when in the long run they protect their hearing.

You need to be seen by a Dr. there is no way for someone to diagnose a hearing problem via this forum. It could come back in the next few minutes or it may never come back. If you know who this person is take them to small claims court and have them pay your medical bills and if the Dr. says your hearing may never come back then its a much bigger law suit. Generally, hearing aids from a doctor are of better quality than those who aren't. The audiologist knows you better than these other people do, and know what is right for you, and what isn't.
I have my hearing aids from my audiologist, and I have never had any problems with it personally. Even though it's pricier, it's worth it. I don't trust these adverts. Anyway, good luck, and ask your audiologist for more information.

Check with the vocational rehabilitation department for your state. If you need the HAs to work, they may help you with the cost. Starkey Foundation gives away HAs as well. The other link is not well maintained, but has many sources for funding for hearing aids.
