Educate Yourself on the Three Types of Hearing Aids

Sunday, October 10th, 2010

[eba kw="ear hearing aids" num="1" ebcat=""]
Lately, people are searching the web for more information about ear hearing aids. Curiousity about ear hearing aids has resulted in numerous websites on the subject.

It is best to do complete research on ear hearing aids. Obviously, one should learn as much as possible about ear hearing aids. For a better understanding you should search further on ear hearing aids.If you and your doctor have determined that your hearing loss problem warrants a hearing aid, then you will want to speak with your hearing specialist about the options you have. Of course, educating yourself beforehand is always a good place to start. Therefore, take the time to learn a bit about the options you may have with regard to hearing aids in the following crash course.Educating oneself is always the first step in conquering a new phase in life. When you educate yourself about a potential problem or medical issue, you gain power over the problem. It will allow you to break through from fear, worry, or anxiety as you learn the ins and outs of your health issue. It is no different with a hearing problem. One option for hearing aids is a canal hearing aid. They are used for mild to severe hearing loss, although they are not strongly suggested for persons with severe cases as their size makes it more difficult to amplify their volume and overall power. One subtype of the canal style is a hearing aid that goes completely into your ear, making it hidden. The other subtype is one that still goes into the canal but is visible on the outside. Both are made to fit perfectly into your ear, meaning a model of your ear canal will be made in order to craft the devices specifically for you. In-the-ear hearing aids are made to set just inside the ear, making it visible, just like the second subtype of the canal style. They are also used for mild to severe cases of hearing loss. Since they rest on the outer ear area, which grows with age, the in-the-ear style is not highly recommended for children. This style allows the hearing specialist to decide whether to equip your device with a special coil that can make listening to sound through speakers and telephones easier. The reasoning for this is that the coil uses a magnet rather than the usual hearing aid microphone. As you know, microphone and speaks can often interact, causing feedback. The magnetic coil removes the risk of such feedback, making it slightly easier on you to hear over the phone or speakers.  Behind-the-ear is the third style available. These are also used for mild to severe hearing loss. For children, it is the most common. Like the name suggests, the hearing aid itself with all the electrical parts sits behind the ear, which is connected to a small node fit inside the outer ear. The node can be placed fully inside the tube, invisible, or can fill the canal, making it even more visible than the canal or in-the-ear styles. Apart from the three styles, there are two major types of electronics used. The two main types are digital and analog. You will work closely with your specialist to determine not only which style will best work for your needs and lifestyle but also which type of electronics will be used within your hearing aid. Either way, it will be specifically catered to you in a variety of ways. The technology in these small devices is truly amazing. The effect is even more amazing. People such as yourself who have experienced frustration and worry over the loss of hearing have been given a new lease on life thanks to these miniscule devices.

With improvements in hearing aid technology the hearing aids of today are capable of adjusting and performing practically on their own in many environments, but there are some tips to help make the most of your hearing aids.
First of all hearing aids do not work in a drawer. They only work in your ears. Your hearing aids must be inserted in the appropriate ear and worn consistently to receive the maximum benefit from your hearing aids. Your hearing aids can get lost so they should be in your ears or in a case to reduce the probability of loss or damage. Pets are a number one cause of damage so make sure your hearing aids are out of their reach.
For your hearing aids to function they must have working batteries inserted. With current technology your hearing aids will give a low battery warning when it is time to replace them. Like all batteries hearing aid batteries are toxic if ingested so make sure that they are stored in an area away from pets and children.
Hearing aids must be cleaned so every night after removing your hearing aids you should clean them using the provided cleaning tools. This is performed by gently scooping any debris out of the center of the earbud or the canal end of the hearing aid for custom models. Some hearing aids have wax filters under the earbud or on the receiver end of the hearing aid that will need to be changed periodically.
Hearing aids must be placed in the correct ear (s) all hearing aids are specific to the right or left ear. They must be inserted into the appropriate ear for maximum hearing benefit and to ensure that they do not fall out. Your hearing aids may need adjusted/programmed.
After wearing hearing aids for a few days or months you may notice some sounds or voices are not adequately amplified or over amplified. The nice thing about current technology is that most issues can be resolved with simple computerized adjustments or reprogramming of the hearing aids. Another thing to keep in mind is that you should have your hearing evaluated annually to check the stability of your hearing loss. If there is a change in hearing sensitivity your hearing aids can usually be adjusted accordingly.
Some hearing aids have the capability of putting multiple environmental programs in them that are accessed via a button. By simply tapping the button the hearing aid will change into a preprogrammed setting that is appropriate for your current environment. Understanding your hearing aid and its capabilities is an important aspect to hearing aid success.
Hearing loss affects millions of Americans and many of those feel the social aspects that can accompany a hearing loss. Hearing aids can help lessen social withdrawal and increase enjoyment of activities that were once a big part of life, helping people to stay in touch with their surroundings. They also not only increase quality of life for the wearer, but also for their friends and family. Hearing loss affects the one with it, but it also affects everyone around them.
So with current hearing aid technology and appropriate care hearing aid wearers of today should enjoy the benefits of reconnecting with their world by hearing what they have been missing.

Hearing Aids – What Size Should You Buy?

Wednesday, October 6th, 2010

[eba kw="ear hearing aids" num="1" ebcat=""]
Interestingly, there has been a lot of recent interest in ear hearing aids. Increased attention to ear hearing aids has resulted in numerous websites on the subject.

TaKe the time to fully investigate ear hearing aids. Obviously, one should spend as much time as possible fully understanding ear hearing aids. For more informationyou can search further on ear hearing aids.Once you realize that you have a hearing loss and want to correct it and hear better again, you have made the first step. Now you have to decide which style is going to be best for you! There are a lot of different sizes and shapes out there, but the most important thing is to select a hearing aid style that is going to be most appropriate for your hearing loss.

One of the most popular styles of aids is the Open Ear. These are small behind the ear hearing aids that connect to the ear by either a small tube or wire. When they use a wire there is a speaker, or receiver, on the end that goes into your ear canal. This type is called a RIC, or receiver in the canal. The largest benefit to this type of hearing aid is that it leaves your ear canal open so you don’t feel plugged up. If you have a hearing loss in just the high frequencies this may be a good choice for you. But if you have hearing loss in the low and mid frequencies, Open Ear hearing devices were not intended for your loss. You can be fit with an earmold that will plug up your ear, but it will help you with those low pitch sounds – But then you’re plugging up your ear again. You would just have a smaller behind the ear (BTE) hearing device, but not technically an Open Ear Hearing Aid.

For some people that’s fine. They have a hearing instrument that is giving them enough power and it is small. If you need a lot of power , Open Ears may not be the best thing for you. It is generally not a good idea to buy a hearing device that is using all its power to meet your loss, no matter how good it looks! Open Ears do not typically have a lot of power. There are some exceptions, but these are limited too. If you have a moderate to profound hearing loss, then you will need a Behind the Ear (BTE) hearing aid. You needs will be met with this type.

In the ear hearing aids, especially the small CIC style are also popular. Some manufacturers have better technology for these products than others, primarily because they do a better job controlling feedback (whistling). There’s nothing more aggravating than to have your hearing aids whistle when you put your hand or a telephone near your ear, or when you hug someone.

There is more to choosing hearing aids than looks alone. Your hearing professional is the best person to talk to about which hearing aids are best for you.

An Overview of Cic (Completely In The Canal) Hearing Aids

Saturday, October 2nd, 2010

[eba kw="hearing aid pictures" num="1" ebcat=""]
A frequent internet search these days is hearing aid pictures. Great interest in hearing aid pictures has had a significant impact on various related websites.

MaKe sure you thoroughly understand hearing aid pictures. Obviously, one should learn as much as possible about hearing aid pictures. For more informationyou should search the web for hearing aid pictures.Completely in the canal hearing aids (also known as CIC hearing aids) are, as the name suggests, hearing  aids which fit entirely  within the wearers ear canal.  These revolutionary devices are the smallest hearing aids on the market and are invisible to the average observer who doesn’t know they are there.  Most major hearing aid brands and manufacturers now offer this inconspicuous alternative to traditional behind the ear, or BTE, hearing aids.  CIC hearing aids are custom made to fit deep inside the individual wearers ear canal and are said to mimic the natural auditory process more closely then any other style of hearing aid.  They are best suited to people with a mild to moderate hearing loss.  There are a number of advantages and disadvantages that should be taken into consideration when  deciding between CIC hearing aids and the BTE models. For audiologists, otologists, speech therapists and other hearing professionals, the primary appeal of CIC hearing aids are their acoustic advantages. They are able to closely simulate environmental, and more importantly, speech sounds, patterns, nuances etc.  This is imperative to a hearing impaired individual’s competency with the spoken word.  Additionally, since CIC hearing aids are worn closer to the eardrum then their BTE counterparts, their microphones are better able to amplify and therefore give a boost to any residual hearing the wearer may have.  The advantage that is most often touted by the wearers of CIC devices, however, is their cosmetic appeal and inconspicuousness.Conversely, it is important to keep in mind that CIC hearing aids also have some drawbacks.  If financial constraints are a part of the picture, it should be noted that completely in the canal hearing aids are somewhat more expensive to purchase then behind the ear hearing aids are.   Another issue that may make them cost prohibitive to those on a tight budget is that increased  susceptibility to ear wax build up puts CIC hearing aids at higher risk for damage, therefore necessitating  pricey repair bills or replacement hearing aids.  Whereas BTE hearing instruments are appropriate for almost all hearing impaired individuals regardless of the type or degree of hearing loss,  CIC hearing aids are not recommended for individuals with certain kinds of hearing loss.  They are also unlikely to be prescribed or advised for children. First of all children tend to be less able to tolerate the discomfort and irritations that sometimes come along with the use of CIC models, especially in the beginning.  Plus children’s ear canals aren’t done growing, so they will need to be refitted and replaced much more often for them then for adults.  The size of CIC hearing aids and their even tinier batteries make them difficult to manipulate for the elderly, arthritis sufferers  and others with conditions and diseases which effect fine motor control.  Feedback and no volume control are two more drawbacks often mentioned by CIC hearing aid users.Audiologists are the best resource hearing impaired individuals have to help them objectively decide whether CIC or BTE hearing aids are better for them.  They can also point wearers in the direction of the best CIC hearing aids provider.  Research on the pros and cons can also be done at the library or on the internet.
