I have received Digital Hearing Aids, & would like to know how to change the filters in them. Since they NEED it about every 2 or 3 months, should I change them MONTHLY whether theyneed it or not? Or should I just change them when they NEED it?

No. What the doctor may have meant (and I've asked my audiologist about this as I've had the experience) is that when we wear hearing aids we get used to hearing a lot of different sounds that we ghaven't heard for a long time as we have lost our hearing, and when we remove our hearing aids then our hearing seems duller, simply because we've gotten used to hearing more with our aids in.

Another thing to remember is that when someone who is deaf/hard of hearing/hearing impaired, call them what you want, that person ios still deaf, with or without hearing aids. Hearing aids simply compensate for the degree of hearing loss a person has.

Please do let your grandfather be put off by what he was told. Hearing aids can and do make a big difference to a persons quality of life. Take it from me and the millions like me around the world who wear hearing aids every day.

I have had this to, do you use a hearing loop system like when you turn your hearing aid to a certain position so you can hear the person behind the counter, well sometimes they can mess with other systems or you might have not turned it off.

Look into the Starkey Fund – they base their coverage on financial need. She would be fit with Starkey hearing aids through this fund. Also check out the Lions Club as they sometimes fund purchases for people in their area in need. Check out your church too. Funds are in place for people in need for sure. You just have to do some leg work, make some calls and ask. They don't advertise these kinds of services. I am not sure if Michigan has hearing aid coverage for Medicaid recipients. But you may want to check that out as well.

You may want to see if the audiologist you work with could suggest some cheaper options, reconditioned instruments, or payment plans. Good luck!

This was a really encourgaging presentation. Seeing how close science is to developing stem cell treatments for deafness gives me hope that my own hearing problems may be cured someday. About 5 years ago I began suffering from Meniere’s disease. To date I have lost about 60% of the hearing in my left hear and have a persistent loud ringing 24/7. Although my condition is nothing compared to individuals suffering from illnesses like AIDS and cancer, it is hard to live with.

Your Grandma's hearing aids have not been set appropriately for her. I would recommend she return to the Beltone office she purchased them through and have them re-program the hearing aids. It is ideal to have a family member go to the appointment with her to ensure proper care is given and to talk with her while she is getting them tuned. This will help the family know at the time of the office visit that they have been set correctly and she is hearing properly.

Being fit with new hearing aids is a process and does take a few visits to ensure the hearing aids have been adjusted properly. There is also an adjustment period for the hearing aid wearer to get used to hearing with their new hearing aids.

Also testing called Real-ear verification is an absolute must in the hearing aid fitting process. This allows the audiologist or hearing aid specialist to visibly see how well the hearing aids are amplifying once fit on the patient. If the Beltone office she went to does not have real-ear verification, then that is very disappointing and I would recommend going to another office.

We contacted an American Man that provides hearing aids to the Poorer 3rd world countries such as Peru. He gave me prices of $300-$500 for Digital Programmables being a 12 band 4 channel hearing aid. Also for a 32 channel 64 band, he quoted me $699. I bought the 32 Channel for $699. All I had to do was mail him 2 ear impressions to him in Peru using DHL and he sent my custom built hearing aids back to me in 3 weeks. I save about $3000 using this man.
