Well, personally, I have experienced a bit of hearing loss after listening to loud stuff…well, kind of experienced.
In the past…well, not that far back, about half a year ago, I used to watch television and blast the volume(Nah, I didn't disturb the neighbors). Though it is kinda nice to do so as you block out all surrounding noise, I realised that when speaking to my friends, I could not hear them as clearly as I used to and they begun to make jokes such as "Hey dude, you gotta get a hearing aid!"
Anyway, I do think that you'll suffer from significant hearing loss if you listen to you iPod at too loud volumes but I doubt if it would result in permanent hearing loss. You might experience a kind of high pitched ringing noise after listening to extremely loud music and depending on the loudness and how long you've been listening to, the time that your hearing will return differs.

Thank you for your fair comments. I know I tend to defend Bono as much as I can sometimes and put down Freddie in the process. The thing is that before I had a computer of my own, I’d watch my Live Aid DVD over and over…and always watched the Queen and U2 performances. I never even considered comparing the two. They were both great in their own way. But now with the constant U2/Queen arguments, I have to defend U2 in any way I can. Btw I don’t really believe the direct correlation deal.

A cheap but good one is going to be around $1,000. Unfortunately you may well run into problems with it.
The problem is that you are overly sensitive to certain sounds, which sounds like recruitment or hyper accusis. Therefore it is important that a hearing aid take this into account and refuse to over amplify in these specific sensitive regions of your hearing. This kind of sophisticated digital programmable technology is far more expensive. Good models can run $2,000 – $4,000.
However, Farm Bureau have an excellent program called American Hearing Benefits that offers a discount of 40-60% off the regular price of hearing aids. It's an amazing program that could get you cutting edge technology for $2,000 or less.
As for the suggestion of getting a free sample, that is unlikely to happen. The closest chance you have is if you happen to live in the same city as a major hearing aid manufacturer. They may allow you to beta test their new products for free. But you will have to show up for follow up visits and possibly answer questionnaires or file reports about your experiences.

You didn't provide the details of your hearing loss or your age, so my best guess is you're "technically" deaf because 'hard of hearing' is generally associated with 'mild' and 'moderate' groups.
Mild (25-40 dB) – (mildly) hard of hearing
Moderate (40-70 dB) – hard of hearing or deaf (it's common for one to say they're "deaf in one ear," though)
Severe (70-90 dB) – deafened or deaf
Profound (91 dB or more) – deaf

2 CKC registered female smooth coat mini dashchunds. 1 1/2 yr old. Pawley is black and tan and Duchess is black and white piebald. NOT spayed. Duchess did have 1 litter, apx 8 wks ago. They ARE housetrained,crate trained, puppy pad trained. They will sit when told too. They do great with our cats and other dog. Very affectionate. Has shots. Just got a 51k mile 98 ford windstar and am wondering what this particular noise is its a kind of a winding noise when I come to a stop, I want to fix it and make it sound nice and quiet !
