My father is getting lapband surgery. How do I be supportive when I’m scared shitless? So, my Da is fat. He always has been. He’s also always been terribly lax in health care – very typical ‘male’ according to people. He has back issues from car accidents during his misspent youth, knee issues from physical labour, hearing loss from his job and an assortment of other things. My mother swears he’s depressed too. So when I rang tonight he told me (off hand and sounding kinda nervous) (it’s hard to judge – I’ve never heard him be nervous, but when he sounded like my little brother I figured something was off) that he’s going through the consults needed for lapband surgery. So this should be a good thing, right? Diets haven’t worked for him, exercise is problematic and damn it, I want him to be around and healthy to know my daughter. But I find myself terrified (what if he dies) and angry (Jesus dad, just stick to a fucking diet*) and sad (what if he’s doing this because he’s…

yes they can. Basically nerve damage means the hearing loss is permanent and medical treatment with medication or surgery will not improve the hearing. So your only option of hearing better is to get a hearing aid to amplify the sounds for you.

Not knowing what brand of hearing aid you have, I'd have to say that the AHS# number is the serial number. Hearing aids aren't all that big, so there isn't much in the way of space for much more info, and the serial number wouldn't be on the inside of the unit. The only other place I'd look would be the inside of the battery door.

Nope, it seems insurance companies don't consider hearing to be essential. The government I think gives assistance for children who need hearing aids, but us older people no one cares about.
Now this may or may not help, but there are some types of hearing aids that can be used with some success for certain types of hearing loss.
Next thing, hearing aids are not all one would think they are for that amount of money. When I am in a quiet place and am talking to someone, I don't need a hearing aid. When I am in a nosiy place and am talking to someone I found the hearing aid made it worse, because it amplified the noise as well as the person speech, so it ended up a wash.
I spent 2K and stopped wearing mine. Has to tell you something.

All three of these hearing aids contain microprocessors that perform digital filtering to customize the amplification to the wearer’s hearing profile. They further dynamically adjust to reduce ambient noises. There is a tiny computer port inside the battery door that allows them to be reprogrammed as required. The hearing aid on the upper right fits behind the ear and allows some of the ambient sound around the output hole. The hearing aid on the upper left fits completely inside the ear and can not be seen unless some one looks directly into the ear. The hearing aid on the lower left fits even further into the ear and can’t be seen at all.

In 2007, the average hearing aid in the US sold for just under $2000 each. You can expect to find a range anywhere from just under $1000 to over $3000 a piece. Why the cost? They're very sophisticated micro-computers, individualized to each specific person's needs, extremely small, and become obsolete as quickly as other consumer electronics yet are sold in relatively small numbers (think big screen TVs when they first came out), just to name a few reasons.
My best advice is to stay away from gimmicky ads in the paper and coupon deals…seek out a recommendation from an audiologist after a thorough hearing exam. Not all hearing aid dispensers are audiologists so make sure you are seeing a hearing health care professional (ie. an audiologist) not a salesperson. You can ask your primary care physician who they recommend, or ask your insurance company who is on your plan.
If cost is a concern, seek out the best hearing aid you can afford as they will last about 5 years on average. Sound quality is proportionate to cost, and matching you up with a hearing aid successfully means getting features that will work well for how you plan to use it. Ask about payment plans, use your health care spending account if you have one, and see if you qualify for any discounts through your health insurance (although they are rarely covered.)

As a child, growing up is not the easiest thing to do. However, we all have to grow and develop, and mature into the people we are going to be. The act of growing and changing can be a harsh one, particularly if you are a little different. Health is definitely a factor that can make you stick out from the norm, and it can be hard to try to fit in. For example, if you had issues with hearing and had to wear one of those terribly large hearing aids, you”d probably be self conscious about this fact. Fortunately, this is one health issue that can be taken care of when you have the right provider for auditory health. If you have to start wearing hearing aids at a young age, the largest of your concerns is probably how to conceal the fact that … hearing aids, hearing aid, hearing, hearing loss, hearing problems, hearing exam, hearing test, hearing solutions

It’s amazing how technology has changed the way we live. Since the end of the Second World War, more products have been invented than in all of recorded history. After WWII came the invention of the microwave oven, the pocket calculator, and the first wearable hearing aid. While the first two have gotten smaller and more affordable, hearing aids haven’t changed much. Now there’s an alternative… the Hearing Impairment Device – Neutronic Ear®.

Don't worry about the brand of phone, because all of the phones can be equipped with a volume controlled head set.
Worry about coverage and clarity of signal. My best experience so far are with T-Mobile and Verizon, away from Cingular or Sprint PCS.
I think both of those providers have great family plans, by the way and have good coverage in your area.

there is no standard setting to what they hear. Each musician will hear what the need/want to hear in order to keep in time. Obviously, different members of a band work on different things to keep in time. Bass guitar and Drums often use each other, like Guitar and Vocals sometimes like to work off each other. Obviously with Drums mixed in in all positions as the drummer keeps the beat. Not all bands use ticker tracks, some do, depends on if things like audio or backing tracks need to be played in a song. Obviously if backing tracks are being used, the band needs to make sure they are playing at the same speed as the backing track used.
Not sure as I can add much else to it. Hope that helps a bit

Some people may be focusing on cochlear implants, but those are usually people with profound losses, not people with mild and moderate. There are still plenty of people that don’t need a cochlear implant because they have enough hearing but are missing some frequencies, so they don’t qualify; in which case, hearing aids will help.

What a load of crap. Very un-imformative information about hearing aids. The people that sell hearing aids for a living are better versed to properly fit a hearing aid over a doctor. Doctors spend more time treating ear illnesses then learning the process to fit a hearing aid properly. Doctors are a business also. they see hundreds of people a week treating people because it takes up to six+ months to get paid from the insurance. Its not like that automatically makes them more qualified.
