What The Heck Is An Open Hearing Aid?

An open hearing aid is another name for behind – the – ear ( BTE ) or over – the – ear ( OTE ) hearing aid devices. No matter what you call it, open hearing aids work remarkably well, especially for people with serious hearing loss. Many people also find them more comfortable than hearing aids that you have to stick inside your ear. They are one of the most common kinds of hearing aids that you can purchase.
You Have To See Your Doctor
But hearing aids will not work for all persons with hearing problems – even for people with the same exact hearing affliction you have.
“Presidential hearing aid history includes President Ronald Reagan and President Bill Clinton, two presidents of very different ages who both wore hearing aids.”
If you have trouble hearing, then you need to get to your gp to find out just why you can ‘ t hear as well as before. It might be an anatomical reason, or something might have fallen into your ear canal ( it happens ). In those cases, a hearing aid of any kind usually won’t help you.
Open hearing aids are small, smooth, plastic devices with a case behind your ear and a thin, clear plastic tube going into your ear.
“Considering advances in technology, and the ability of science to shrink useful items, the hearing aid of the future is likely to be an implantable device or even a surgical procedure”
Yes, you still have to deal with things sticking into your ear, but many find this tube less irritating than an in – the – ear device.
Here at thehearingaidsource.com we try to keep abreast of the latest information. Please note that our website has grown significantly! Finding the information you need is best achieved by using our handy search function in the upper right hand corner of this page.
Open hearing aids seem to work best for those who have trouble hearing high frequency noises. You need to go to the physician in order to determine if you can or can ‘ t hear high frequency noises.
So Many Aids, Only Two Ears
Most open hearing aids are made with digital technology as opposed to the old transistor hearing aids made from the 1950 ‘ s to the 1980 ‘ s.
“There are at least two hearing aid manufacturers claiming to make the smallest hearing aid in the world”
The advantage of digital technology is that is can help you distinguish between what sounds you want to hear and what sounds you don’t. Many find digital hearing aids have fewer problems with feedback, are less bothered by the slightest breeze and can even filter out background noises.
Open hearing aids now come in several colors, but are all very light weight.
“However amazing the world’s smallest hearing aids are, they still might be the wrong hearing aids for you. Since you will be working with these devices every day, you need to be comfortable handling them, putting them on and taking them off”
Some models weigh just over an ounce. Many wearers of open hearing aids get used to the feel of them in just a few minutes. Although some open hearing aids are available through mail order, the safest way to buy them is from an audiologist.
An audiologist can help tune the frequencies of the digital technology as well as make it more comfortable for you to wear, if necessary. You also know who to go to if any problems should develop with your hearing aid.

It can… depending on if it's progressive or not. Many genetic hearing losses are not progressive. Some are… it's really hard to tell you either way. It's something to talk to your audiologist about. I'm sure you'll get a follow-up eval done in 6 months, and that will tell how much or if it's progressing.
It may also be something that you should talk to a genetic counselor about… depending on the gene affected (if it is genetic), that will tell you if it will progress. Also know that hearing losses are extremely variable. Just hang in there for the time being. If you were only diagnosed at 15, I'm assuming your loss isn't too bad at this point. Do whatever you can to learn about it and why it happened.

Constant exposure to loud noises would be a cause of nerve deafness. Manufacturing plants have plenty of equipment that produce sound levels in excess of 150db that would cause deafness without the use of hearing protection.

Worry about coverage and clarity of signal. My best experience so far are with T-Mobile and Verizon, away from Cingular or Sprint PCS.
I think both of those providers have great family plans, by the way and have good coverage in your area.

A mutation of a specific microRNA appears to prevent development of the auditory sensory hair cells in the inner ear, leading to hearing loss and deafness. The cells are essential for encoding sound as electrical signals that are then sent to the brain. Researchers at the University of Sheffield are hopeful the discovery could provide the basis for treating progressive hearing loss and deafness.
Above, immature inner hair cells from normal cochlea. Compare below to hair cells in a strain of mice called diminuendo—which carry a single base mutation in the miR-96 gene—where hair cell development is arrested around birth.

Try contacting a company that makes hearing aids and ask
them if they could send you one. Tell them about your chosen
assignment. Give them all of the information you can. The more
information you pass onto them, the better your chances are
that you will get several working examples, along with literature
and product support. As for the FM Transmitter… you may
want to purchase something like a Mr. Microphone, take it all
apart, and use the circuitry to suit your needs. Or, you could
build one from scratch… Talk to your science Teacher.

By comparison, hearing loss is a much more immediate problem. Between 30-40 percent of people over the age of sixty-five have suffered some form of hearing loss.

They are called in-the-ear monitors. They allow the musician to hear him or herself while performing, but still protect their hearing from excessive noise from the rest of the band/speakers.
If a musician was simply to plug their ears with earplugs, it would protect them from the loud noise but would alter they way they sound to themselves. Give it a try – put your fingers in your ears and talk. Your voice sounds much different. For a musician this is not an option so back in the days many would perform without ear protection. The consequence? Hearing loss later in life.
Digital technology has allowed musicians to protect themselves but still hear themselves (and their band) perform. The in-the-ear monitors are expensive but very much worth it when in the long run they protect their hearing.
