Infection can certainly damage the ear drum or tiny hairs that help transmit sound in the ear. Another cause could be the anibiotics used to treat the infection. I know a person who went deaf after hospital accidently gave them an antibiotic they were allergic too.
This information…
"Drug induced – some medications can result in damage to the auditory system with prolonged use. They are called ototoxic. Here are a few drugs that are known to cause hearing loss: aminoglycoside antibiotics (such as streptomycin, neomycin, kanamycin); salicylates in large quantities (aspirin), loop diuretics (lasix, ethacrynic acid); and drugs used in chemotherapy regimens (cisplatin, carboplatin, nitrogen mustard)."

My step son had hearing aid but he was 7 when he moved in with us. What I would recomend is just to try it and see if your child will just leave them in. if you see that they are messing with it try to talk and explain why they need them. If that does not work then I would get Sergical Tape. It is the kind they use is DR offices and the ER. There is two differnt kinds, I prefer the one that is like reg tape with holes in it. You should be able to get this at a med supply store or pharmacy. This works good because it won't hurt when youpull of and it does not stick to hair. I would just tape the mold in the ear and then also tape the tube down behind the ear untill he gets use to it.

This will depend on your life style. Perfect hearing is -10 to 10, Normal hearing is 0 to -10 and Average is -10 to -20 dBs. Some people that are involved in Music will want a hearing aid if they are at -20 because they will be needing to hear some frequiencies more clearly.
GENERALY speaking, if you are at -30 and below in frequencies 250, 500, 750, 1000, 1200, 2000 —- You will want a digital hearing aid.

Hearing Aids have been around since the 15th Century and were invented to help people suffering from hearing loss. The first hearing aids were expensive and available for only the financially well-to-do or upper societies. These ancient instruments were made from wood to resemble the human ear in shape and size and thereby amplified sound naturally.

The idea holds true whether you’re talking about the way people handle their relationships and career or whether you’re talking about the way they handle their own health. We’re not only talking about critical diseases and health risks either, but even about the way people handle secondary health concerns such as hearing loss.

Get ye to the hearing repair-est! I suspect it's not a bad battery. If you've been wearing aids this long, you what your aid does when the battery goes south. More likely is a problems with the electronics. I obviously can't diagnose the problem from this distance, but I would suspect one of the following. 1) A bad connection (solder joint or wire), 2) a bad microphone, or 3) a bad speaker – or a combination of any of the above, 4) the speaker or microphone are loose within the aid (the glue has come undone). And of course, the ever popular – your amplifier chip has decided to bite the big one. If your aid is over 5 years old, it's to some degree living on borrowed time. They all die eventually. The ear isn't the nicest neighborhood to work. You've got to put up with a lot of gunk (ear wax), it's hot and humid, and loud noises may fry your innards. Check to see if the aid is still on warranty and/or see if you insurance covers a new one. Unfortunately, I think this one is going to cost you some bucks.

posted by: Alternative Medicine remarks: Risk factors for losing your ability to hear distinctly as you grow older. Amplify’d from http://www.altmeds.com Age-related hearing loss Many adults find their ability to hear declines over time as they age; about half of people over age 75 report some degree of hearing loss, which is called presbycusis. One reason may be the tiny hairs inside the ear that pick up vibrations and stimulate nerves, which the brain interprets as sound. As we age, the hairs die and do not regrow, giving older people less sensitivity to sound. Other factors that can lead to age-related hearing loss include: Repeated exposure to loud sounds in industrial settings, listening to amplified music, or listening to high-volume music with headphones.Heredity. Age-related hearing loss tends to run in families.Smoking. Smokers are at greater risk of hearing loss. Symptoms of age-related hearing loss include ringing in the ears and certain sounds seeming overly loud. Other symptoms…

A hearing impairment is a decrease in the ability to perceive sound. This article discusses the biologic basis of hearing impairment in humans and other animals.
Explanation
Hearing impairment can affect any creature that hears. Sound varies in amplitude (loudness) and frequency (pitch). Most animals are able to sense sound energy, but no individual animal species can detect all frequencies of sound at all amplitudes (levels of loudness). In fact, although there is much overlap, each species has a different set of audible sounds. Within that range of audible sound, each species is attuned to an even narrower range of pitches that it hears best — usually the sorts of sounds that are important for survival. In social animals, like humans, who use sound as a primary means of communication (spoken language), hearing is most sensitive for the pitches that are produced in speech.
The medical term hearing impairment has become controversial due to very strong objections from the deaf community who refute the implication of a disability. Those who consider themselves part of Deaf Culture feel offended by the term "impaired". However, not all people, especially those who become deaf in later years, may make this distinction. (See Models of Deafness)

The Oticon Delta was made for people like your mother. It is a high end digital hearing aid with lots of cool bells and whistles. It is really small and has an almost invisible mold (the part that goes into the ear) which can aid up to moderate losses.
Other aids worth considering is anything that you can get in the following configurations — ITE (in the ear), ITC (in the canal), or CIC (completely in canal). Most major manufacturers have several models that can be obtained in these configurations.
The smaller hearing aids are typically for less severe losses so you need to check with an audiologist to see for sure whether her loss is compatible with this technology
Good luck !

Hearing aids have two broad categories – analog and digital. Analog are the least expensive but are less customizable as digital models which use several technologies to give near-normal hearing. These hearing aids can be placed behind the ear (BTE), inside the ear (ITE), in the canal (ITC) or completely in the canal (CIC). BTE is the largest of the four, but is versatile as it can be used by people with mild or severe hearing loss. Because these are placed behind the ear, they don’t give that somewhat occluded feeling inherent to in the ear models. ITE models, although smaller, but are detectable just the same.

I would imagine if something such as a hearing aid is obstructing the ear channel then there is a chance ear wax will build up and get stuck, but that is also the same for all of use. You could of course use something from the chemist such as Oprex every now and again to help reduce the build up.
I would like to recommend trying ear candles which you get at Chinese medicine places. I tried it once and it was amazing, it's a cone you stick in your ear and light that cleans all the wax out. sounds a little scary but it's fine, although I would recommend you do it with someone else who can help you while you lay on your side on the floor. Basically how it works: the heat from the candle softens up the ear wax and then as it's a hollow tube with one end alights it produces a natural vacuum suction which pulls the wax up into the cone. I clean my ears quite regular and still got loads out, try pulling the cone open afterwards and you'll see what I mean.

While the media should not be above the law, it is important to recognise the need for a general public interest defence As the Leveson inquiry begins to hear its first evidence this week, the media will take a battering. Hearing the details of the hacking of Milly Dowler’s phone will bring home just how unnecessary it was. But Lord Justice Leveson’s remit is broad and it represents a unique opportunity to assess the whole of the media’s relationship with the law – not just one section or organisation. Leveson will undoubtedly emphasise that the press is not above the law. But it is equally important to recognise that the media does require special protection from the law in order to safeguard genuine investigative journalism. Despite the plethora of criminal offences that apply to the media, there is no general public interest defence. The need for such a defence is not diminished by the fact that most of the conduct Leveson will examine does not come within striking distance of a…

A conversation between a Doctor and a Patient -Farting All The Time
Doctor: “What seems to be the problem young man?”
Patient: “Doc, I’ve got the farts. I mean I fart all the time,”
The Doctor nods, “Hmm.”
Patient: “My farts do not stink and you can’t hear them. It’s just that I fart all the time. Look, we’ve been talking here for about 10 minutes and I’ve farted for more than ten times. You didn’t hear them and you don’t smell them, do you?”
“Hmm,” says the Doctor,
He picks up his pad and writes out a prescription.
The patient was thrilled “Great doc. This prescription, will it really clear up my farts?”
“No,” sighs the Doctor, “The prescription is to clear your sinuses. Next week I want you back here for a hearing test.”

One thing that’s a little misleading is that it also depends on your speaker system and if you’re using headphones or not. I don’t use headphones, so I don’t have it going directly into my ear and I found a big difference going from my external speakers to my internal laptop ones. Part of the video should say to use headphones or something so the test will be somewhat equal for all that do it.

Many older people may remember the days when their hearing aid was a large black box strapped to their chest. It resembled a portable transistor radio of the day and had two long wires traveling up to their ears for reception of the sounds, which did not work very well. And, it was not very comfortable or attractive.
