Hi,
Based on the cage calculator that i like to use (it take into account the levels), the 30×18 cage you can house 2 rats, max of 3, however, i told it that the level was the full length and width of the cage, if the level (shelf) is only a part of the total length and width let me know it size and i can re-calculate otherwise visit and you can find out yourself.
the second measurement allows for 1 rat max.
So according to this no more than 3 male rats really.

You may be enamored with quietly and surreptitiously perceiving or discerning the everyday activities of another human being.

the place where you are plugging in the headphones isn't the only place the sound is coming out. That usually happens with the headphone outputs on the front of computers because the sound card doesn't recognize any audio outs other than what it physically has. Try using the speaker output on the back of the computer if possible (only if it won't get you in trouble – and definitely don't mess with any other cables). That will plug you directly into the sound card and fix your problem.
Another idea would be to turn down the master volume (usually found on the desktop or a button on the keyboard) and then, using the headphones in the same audio out you were using before, locate any volume buttons or dials. You may not even need it, as that output may have a set volume it'll play at.

The question can't be answered without knowing what, where and how many outlets, overheads and equipment you are installing. You need a contractor to come and look at your house plans to give you any kind of reasonable estimate.

I found myself nodding my head and chuckling during the first half of the story, as the one culture (American, first world) moves to another culture (Africa, third world) and judges that culture through their own biases. It was then very amusing when that third world view goes to the First World and has their turn of criticizing the ‘superior’ country. They hate the lack of smell in the sterilized supermarket, the huge homes, the lack of community and caring, etc. I certainly hear similar comments from new third world immigrants here in Canada about how cold and selfish the First World folk are. I think Kingsolver has written about very real reactions on both sides – Third World and First World.
