I'm not sure about the darkness, but regarding the hearing loss, it may be due to a cyst-like liquid in your ear (That you may not even be able to feel), or something causing your nerve cells functioning to be hampered.

I suggest you take a nap whenever you feel the slightest bit of tired, try aromatherapy (Helps to clear your head), and drink lots of hot tea.

If you have hearing loss, then you have a chance of possibly passing it on to your children. But if your brother does not have it, I don't believe that he has the chance to pass it on.

Hearing aids are "self contained" and can be used anywhere. FM listening headsets are used only in auditoriums and churches where there is a transmitter set up to rebroadcast the sound coming out of the PA system. The FM listening device (receiver) then picks up the broadcast.

I have noticed that most people take their hearing aids out when using the assisted listening headsets.

To make a long answer short, yes you still will need your hearing aid, but you may choose to take it out when using the FM listening device.

Laura, I think ChromeOS apps will push sites to go toward 'app-happy land' in the beginning. The current site will be the standard website where everything will work. Then an app-like site using HTML5 to prep for the mobile app. A UI that would work well with the common denominator of mobile devices, the browser.

This will depend on your life style. Perfect hearing is -10 to 10, Normal hearing is 0 to -10 and Average is -10 to -20 dBs. Some people that are involved in Music will want a hearing aid if they are at -20 because they will be needing to hear some frequiencies more clearly.

GENERALY speaking, if you are at -30 and below in frequencies 250, 500, 750, 1000, 1200, 2000 ---- You will want a digital hearing aid.

There is an American Guy in South America that I bought My Aids from. He works in Peru helping the Poor and the 3rd world people hear. He has a company called AccuToneUSA and he told me to send my Ear Impressions to Him. He build me 2 VERY nice 32 channel 64 band hearing aids for about $1200 total. These hearing aids retail in the USA for $4000 each. So you should contact him if you have any questions. his name is Doug at accutone, and his email is

Hope I answered your question!!

I have 2 children w/ Sensorineural hearing loss. They both wear hearing aids. It is kind of a misnomer (named wrong) because it isn't acutally a loss, they never had it to begin with. Most likely something they were born with, something in their ears never developed correctly.

You can basically do anything that does not require a phone. I'm hearing impaired also, and as long as I steer clear of jobs requiring long phone hours (i.e. 911 dispatcher like your past position, customer service rep, telemarketer) I've never had a problem. I've worked in a variety of different positions, industries, and settings, and the key is just making sure that you are up front with your supervisor and anyone else you feel needs to know.

Every single supervisor I've had has offered to work with me to ensure I have the tools to perform my job to the best of my abilities, hearing impairment or not.To avoid any discrimination on the basis of disability, employers are bound by law to provide you with reasoanble accommodation. For instance, my supervisor reviews conference calls with me after the fact (in a very respectful way) to ensure nothing was missed. Also, I primarily use email to communicate and am exempt from all those "pick up the phone and talk to someone instead of impersonally emailing them" lectures. :-)

Basically, you can do anything. Follow your passions and be up front about your hearing impairment - that's the best advice I have.

I'm your age, and just got mine in february last year. I feel the same way. I'm the only kid my age in my school with them, and alot of kids have no idea what they are. I'm very self conscious with them, myself, and don't like wearing my hair up (although with sports, and fashion-wise, it's difficult). It's gotten so far that I have people sitting behind me reach out to touch them. WEIRD. I don't personally like the skin color ones, mainly because one of my teachers wears them, and they look like masses in the ear canal. Anyway, those are always an option. Often, i forget I'm wearing them! I'll be in the shower, and will need to check my ears. My best advice is to be confident. It seems a little weird, but just be confident and no one will notice. It sometimes help if i letmy hair hang a little lower over my ears, or if i let a tendril or 2 hang out. Just remember to be confident. Alot of the people in school have seen or talked to someone about their hearing aids before. It's no big deal. If you ever need some advice or whatever, feel free to e-mail me!

Contact your local Sertoma Club, a wonderful non-profit organization that's focus is on Speech & Hearing. Perhaps thru Chamber of Commerce would have a contact name. My club has paid for hearing aids & TDY machines for those in need in our own community. Also provided the local hospital with the new equipment to test new born babies hearing. Budgets are being set now. Contact a member in Sertoma & tell them of your plight.
Sertoma - Service to Mankind
Can't hurt to ask ! Good Luck and God Bless you!

A cheap but good one is going to be around $1,000. Unfortunately you may well run into problems with it.

The problem is that you are overly sensitive to certain sounds, which sounds like recruitment or hyper accusis. Therefore it is important that a hearing aid take this into account and refuse to over amplify in these specific sensitive regions of your hearing. This kind of sophisticated digital programmable technology is far more expensive. Good models can run $2,000 - $4,000.

However, Farm Bureau have an excellent program called American Hearing Benefits that offers a discount of 40-60% off the regular price of hearing aids. It's an amazing program that could get you cutting edge technology for $2,000 or less.

As for the suggestion of getting a free sample, that is unlikely to happen. The closest chance you have is if you happen to live in the same city as a major hearing aid manufacturer. They may allow you to beta test their new products for free. But you will have to show up for follow up visits and possibly answer questionnaires or file reports about your experiences.

An in vivo study shows for the first time that there is a stress-response system within the cochlea that mirrors the signaling pathways of the body's fight or flight response.

Audiologists have an in-house joke about the different types of hearing aids, it goes like this: “ CIC means completely in the canal, ITE means in the ear, BTE means behind the ear, and ITD means in the draw”.
